The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1886. THE SAN. FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE

The New Zealand Times publishes an : article on the Sun Francisco mail' service, and thinks that the faot that'the Zealaridia dogged the steps Qf the Alameda doea uofc merely mean ..that the old contractors consider themselves entitled to payment for cdrryinganbther mail, to the 'colonies, but that they intend to. make a Bid for a separate service from New South Wales to Francisco. The news may look rather serious for the new contracting companies, because the , loss of • the New South Wales portion of the subsidy would naturally leave a very large hole in the year's profits, We are,, however, inclined to think that even ; if the Government of the bister colony were inclined to. favor'a separate service, its Parliament would. never,-sanction the subsidy that would be asked for, If j'the owners ot aliine of steamers arecontent to perform the service for the small portionoE thesubsidy at present to bepaidbyNewSouthWales, thenweh&ve audear proof that the two colonies are paying far too mucih for the service, and that we have been paying to much during the last four or-flVe years. The public could have no cause to, regret the continuance of the duplicate service, because opposition would mean a reduction in the rate of passenger fares Bnd freights, while the utmost punctuality would be observed by both lines. But it seems to us that the ohances of such a public boon are very, remote indeed.. The parties to the ex-, piring contract and the present one are pretty certain to have based their oal-

culations on the most reliable dat* obtainable,. and the margin of profit made by the old' contractors cannot have been-very large, We do not believe that they could afford to run; the new, contractors, and Mat the fat- 1 ter, having the faster and more comfortable steamers, would not only secure the bulk ot the freight, but also nearly the whole of the passenger traffic. The New South Wales portion of the subsidy would be a mere pittance compared with the expenses that would imve to be incurred. Nor is it at all likely that the New South Wales Government would give a largely increased subsidy for the special service, ns it is well known that she has been on the eve of withdrawing from the service altogether, The. trip of the Zealandia, will most likely prove lier. last one on the line, beintf merely made for the sake of claiming payment for what the contractors consider their full contraot time. In addition we say that New South Wales could not withdraw from the new contract at a moment's notice.
