The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1885. THE INSTITUTE.

The Borough Council at its meeting last evening took a very important step in connection with the management of the Institute, a motion put by Cr Muir, I that the Counoil assume the management of the institution after the 31st March next, being carried without a dissentient voice. The Library has undoubtedly been languishing for some time. From aomo cause that yet remains to be explained, the number of subscribers has ftrown beautifully less as the population of the town and its surrounding districts expanded, and the revenue, in place of showing an increase of at least ten or fifteen per cent per annum, has been falling oft. This state of affairs certainly cannot be attributed to a lack of books, for there are at the present time upwards of fifteen hundred works on the catalogue, many of them being new, while a large number of the older standard authors are well represented. All that we can say is that there is a screw loose somewhere, and it will be the duty of the Council to find it out and mend it. Matters could not very well be worse, and the change should therefore be entirely for the better. If the list of subscribers can be increased—and we do not see why it should not be doubled without any very great effort—an important 'advantage will have been gained, The Council will, however, have to act a little less niggardly with regard to the building, the outside state of which i 3 at present a blot on the town, The roof also retires a good deal of attention before winter sets in again. Although the Couucil refnsed the aid that was recently asked for by the Library Committee, it will now find it necessary to carry out the works, wherever the funds may come from.

A meeting of the Maaterton School Committee will be held this evening, The installation of Mr M, Caaolborg as Mayor of Maaterton for Mb second term, is proceeding as we go to press,•. Owners of horses are reminded that acceptances and general entries for, the Maaterton-Opaki Jockey Club Summer Meeting, to be held on Boxing Day and the Monday following, closo with the Secretary, Mr Richd. J. JSitton, at 9 o'clock to-night. St. Leon's Circus and Menagery is announced to open.in Maaterton this evening. The "show" includes 35 performers in the ring, many of them being of exceptional merit, and there is,a stud of 22 horses and ponies, as well as a'menaeerie comprising 25 animals. The announcement is for "the one night only." There was some tall scoring in the Melbourne y East Melbourne match, The latter scored 143, and the former had lost three wickets for 35 runs, when Mcllwraith and Palmer madea stand and took the score to 249. Melbourne lost eight wickets for 472, Mcllwraith getting 143, and Palmer 192, Eleven E.M.0.0. bowlers were tried. Brimingham House, Lambton Quay, Wellington, presents a moat attractive appearance just now, the proprietors, Messrs Whitaker Bros,, having stocked, it with a splendid selection of albums, Christmas cards, ladies' hand bags, and the thousand and one other things that go to make up a display of fancy goods, A misunderstanding having arisen as to the manner in which the presents on the Christmas trees at the Theatre Royal on Christmas Eve will be distributed, we may state that the Rev. W. E. Paige has informed us that there will be no sales in the room. Every person entering will receive a Bealed ticket bearing a number corresponding with another 011 one of the prizes. By thia means no one will know to whom any of the prizes may fall, There will be two trees, one for children and the other for adults, and the articles in both classes are of a very attractive description. The children will, of course, be provided chiefly with toys, many of which are of very superior workmanship. The first prize on the tree for adults will consist of a glass and velvet bracket, both materials being handpainted. MrO. D. Barraud, through whose hands it passed, values it at £3. The second is to consist of a most useful article for the summer,

namely, an ice-making machine, of the value of £2los There is a considerable quantity of Japanese curious, tea services, etc., as well as fancy work supplied by ladies resident in l Masterton, There will be 100 prizes for children, and fully 170 or adults. t The Americans seem to be desirous of surpassing even the old Romans in their wild extravagance. Mr P. Lorillard, who has got together a collection of field trial setters, has expended £12,000 in building kennels for them; the said kennels being described as " the most elegant and complete in America," as well they may be.
