SPECIFIC EFFECTS OF SMOKING
The following extract from the British Medi'cal Monthly will show what the pipe does for the boys:—A medical man, struck with the large number of boys under fifteen years of age he observed smoking, was led to enquire into the effect the habit had upon the general health. He took for his purpose 38, aged from 9 to 15, and carefully examined them. In 27 he discovered injurious traces of the habit. In .22 there wero various disorders of the circulation and digestion, palpitation of the heart, and more or less a taste for strong drink, In twelve there wero frequent bleedings of the nose, ten had disturbed sleep, and twelve had slight urceration of the mucous membrane of the mouth, which, disappeared on ceasing the use of tobacco for some days, Tho doctor treated them all for weakness, but with little effect until the smoking was discontinued, when health and strength were soon restored.
