" Mr Nelson, Engineer for the County of Bruce, MrEdie, Engineer for the Tuapeka ' ...-• County, and a number of others were presont. The frame of the machine is in ' • the form of a diamond, the. sides being about three feet in length. A ■ hood is fixed at the one acute apex to' which the .horses are yoked, same as in ■ a plough or harrows,. At the rear are stilts, same . as those of a plough, by which the implement is guided. Three lines-are placed in each of the two front sides, along tne latter two being plates of steel forming a scoop. . It • is. drawn by two horses, which are made to straddle the ruts,. When moving along, the tines loosen the ridges of earth and clay, which is immediately gathered.into the ruts by the scoop. The draught is very easy, and one horse would be sufficient, but foi the difficulty of having to walk' in the rut. .Where the trial was made, the ruts were rough and deep, but undeE%3uence of the implement they speedily bjjjjfjfieared, the road presenting the appearance of having been nicely'dressed off. Even with such roads as that operated on on Tuesday, two miles can easily ; be filed up in a day with one machine." The Engineers and others present expressed themselves as thoroughly satisfied with the implement, nrhiqh, according to rough calculation, ia '
estimated to perform as much work as a. gang of about forty men, Wo have'no, doubt it very s,o,an will be in general use all qvor the oolbivy, and that it will effeot considerable saving to the ratepayers,— Clutha Leader,
