A GOOD REPLY.
—.—_» —, — In proposing the toast of local Indus tries at the lunch to the Premier on Wednesday, Mr A. W. Hogg took the opportunity to say that they were greatly in need of substantial encouragement, meaning, of course, by means of a protective tariff, and that he was glad the present Government would do all in its power in that direction. As it happened, Mr Jajies Muijl was called upon to reply, and being concerned in the most extensive factory in Mastetton, what he said should not be lighty passed over. He said what they wanted was not protection from outside competition, but a market for what they could manufacture beyond the wants of Masterton. As the coachbuilding industry is evidently suffering from no competition from outside the colony, the idea of " encouraging" it by means of protective duties is simply an absurdity. A very largo number of our industries will be found in a similar position.
