Wellington, this day.

Messrs J. McKerrbw, W. M. Maskell, and F. 1!. Hutchison, havo been elected governors of the N.Z. Institute. •

The Government have received the following telegrams, re the Pohangina reefs, from Mr James Park, one of« the Geological Department:—"Visited Pohangina on 29th November. Slip has been cleared, and supposed reef recovered. It turns out to be a small cuticular mass of whitish grey limestone, interbedded with the rock of the country. It is slightly chrystalised, and the prospectors mistook it for quartz. The men on the ground have not eveu seen the color of gold, and are greatly perplexed at the .fabulous results of the assays by jewellers, which are probably based on a globule of silver derived-from lead oxide used as a re-agent in the' assay. The rock is -the same as on the Rimutaka and in the Gorge." Dr Hector reports to the Minister of Mines oil a specimen of quartz sent for analysis by the Ohristchurch Gold Mining Company from Browning Pass:—" The analysis proves that tho yield of eold is at the rate'of 1G ounces 11 pennyweights 12 grains per ton, The following appointments of Justices of the Peace have been gazetted :—W.
