TARA'i'AHI - CARTERTON JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING. President, W. C, Buchanan, M.H.R,; Judge, W. Lowes, J.P.; Starter, Jolin Eaton; Handicapper, Hugh McMaster; Stewards, Andrew McKenzie, G. W, Dellar, Jno, Eaton, F. W. R. Seed, W, Franois, and Alfred Clifton; Clerk of Scales, Andrew McKenzie; Clerk of Course, A Allen; Hon. Treasurer, Frank Seed-; Secretary, G. 'W. Deller.

The annual spring meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Jockey Club was held

yesterday afternoon,, having been adjourned from the previous Saturday. It would have been difficult indeed to have chosen finer weather. There was no wind, and the atmosphere was beautifully clear and bright, while the sun was not too hot. There was a very fair attendance of visitors, about a third of whom came from Masterton, the remainder being made up chiefly of residents from Carterton, Gladstone, and the' Lower Valley. The rain which fell on Saturday left the course in excellent condition, the ground being neither too hard-nor •too soft. Considerable improvements have been effected on the course of late, but unfortunately some of them have not been sufficiently advanced to be of use at the meeting under notice. The turn for home has been smoothed off so that at future meetings thero will be less risk of lnrses running off. The newly made ground has/been sown in grass, and after being rolled once or twice will be in splendid condition. A saddling paddock and rooms for the Stewards and jockeys have been erected, and the former is, we think, the best we have seen in the provincial district, It is very roomy,' and well enclosed, all that is required to complete it being tho levelling of the ground, which is still rather lumpy. The racing on the whole was fair, The hurdle race was considered by many to be a moral for Cribbage, though Seagull was the more heavily backed on the totalizator. The result proved that the confidence in the visitor was not misplaced, Herd, who rode him, displayed a splendid piece of] horsemanship while approaching the last hurdle. Cribbage had been following him all along, but on Hearing the'last jump he came up alongside to be in a better position for the run home. Herd immediately ohecked his horse, and the result was that Cribbage rail off. Seagull then came in at a oanter. The Maiden Plate was the cause several protests, oven before the race came off, and two of the horses wero scratched in consequence. Fawn, the winner, was also protested against, but was allowed tho money, Administrator was considered a good thing for the Taratahi-Carterton Handicap, but the weight told too much, and lie could only get third. No wQiider, when lie had to make an allowance of nearly four stone to some of the horses running against him. The following are the details of the meeting

Handicap Hurdle Race, of 25 sovs, second horse to receive 5 sovs from the

stakes. Two miles; over eight flights of hurdles. Mr T. Smith's b g Seagull, aged, lOst 21bs, (Herd) 1 Mr T. Ray's c g Cribbage (late Rangiora), aged, lOst 71bs (Osborne) ~r 2 Mr J, Ray's c g Dan' O'Connell, aged, 9st 101b (Driscoll) 3 There were only the three starters. Dan O'Connell went away with the lead, Seagull next, and Cribbage last., The leader was allowed full play, ai)d got a long way ahead, but he run off at the second hurdle and lost all chance. The other two kept within about three lengths of each other, Seagull leading until Hearing the last hurdle when Cribbage came up and the two seemed to be about to take the jump together when Seagull was eased off, Cribbage then swerved, almost throwing Seagull out of his stride, The

latter, however, managed to take the hurdle, and came home an easy winner. Totalisator 92,46 on winner, dividend, £ll6s.

Hack Huadle Race, of 10 sovs, If miles, over six flights of hurdles, lOst up, ~ Walkover 1 Skipper 2 Acme 3 Te Whiti also ran. This was a far more interesting event than the preceding one, all the horses jumping well, while the pace was also made pretty warm. In the end Walkover won pretty easily. Totalizator, £64. 9on the winner, dividend, £6 4s.

Maiden Plate, of l£ miles, weight for

age. Mr Manama's g m Fawn, Gyrs, (Polting) if;- ... 1 Mr J. Skeet' ; /jlk g All Day. (late Daybreak), S yrs ... 2 Acme and Lady Maud were scratched. Fawn had tlie best of the start, but soon gave place to All Day. Running near the main road the two got together, and they kept.that position passing the stand, after which All Day had the lead by nearly half a length, which he kept till opposite the school, Passing the main road a second time Fawn came away with greatest .ease, and won by about a dozen lengths, looking perfectly fresh, .while All Day was thoroughly baked. Totalizator 79, 27 on the winner. Dividend £2l3s. A protest against Fawn for having won advertised money was disallowed.

Taraiuhi - Carterton Jockey Club Spring Handicap of 50 sovs,, second horse to. receive 5 sovs from the stakes; 1];- miles. Mr VV. lorns' b f Humor, 3 yrs; 7st

101b... ... ... ... ■ ... 1 MrT. Thompson's gg Little Scrub, :. 6 yrs; Bst 111b- ... ... ~, 2 Mr P. F. Tancred's r h Administrator; 3 Rata, 6st 121b and Theodore, sat 71b also ran.' Pasha, Revoke and Pilgrimage were scratched. There was a lot of delay • at the staVfc, caused chiefly by the frac-

tiouaness of Little Scrub, who, however, managed to have the best of it when they* were sent away, Rumor being second, Administrator third, and Rata aud Theodore last. There waß no, change when they pasßed the stand, except that Rata improved liis position a little. At the back of the course daylight could be seen between any two of the horses. Attheroad Administratoivmade an effort and passed Rumour, but he could not get near Little Scrub. In the straight Rumour was let out, and soon obtained the lead, which she maintained with eomparative~ease, winning by threequarters of a length. Administrator was a fair third, tho - others being nowhere. Totalizator 263,55 on the winner, dividend, £4 Gs,

Hack Race of lO sova; one mile, catch weights.,

There were nine started in this event, which Susette won with comparative ease. There were 19 in the totalizator, of which 6 were on the winner. The dividend was £2l7s. » .

OIiAREVII/LE Handicap, of 30 sovs; lj miles; second horse to savo his'stakes. Mr T. Thompson's g g Little Scrub, syrs, fist 21b (Carr) ... 1 Mr P. F. Tancred's c f Revoke, 3vrs, 7st7lb ; 2 ( Mr J. Sheet's c g Rata, syrs, 7st 51b 3 Pilgrimage Bst 111b, The Slave 7st3lbs, and Lady Maud 6st also ran. Administrator 9st 71b, and Rumour Bst 21b, were scratched, Pilgrimage got the best of a fair start, Lady Maud being second, and Little Scrub third, Past the stand Little Scrub was in front, while Pilgrimage had dropped back into last place. At the back of the course Rata made an unsuccessful effort, and then contented himself with keeping company with Pilgrimage. Nearing the turn for home, Revoke, who had been lying in the middle all through, looked dangerous, but could not get on even terms with Little Sorub, who won by something over a length. This concluded the meeting.
