The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1885. THE MASTERTON MANGATAINOKE SPECIAL SETTLEMENT ASSOCIATION.
The Secretary of the Masterton Mangatainoke Special Settlement Association has received a reply from the. Land Department to the letter sent by him, in which he stated that the block allotted to the Association was unsuitable for small farm settlement, and we are glad to learn that it is of a very favorable nature. The Minister of Lands has unhesitatingly accepted the assurance of Mr Job Vile, tbo Secretary of the Association, that the land is entirely unfit for a settlement of the kind, and now ?ives the Association the choice out'of a large block on the western side of the Makakalii, and nearly opposite Eketahuna. The value affixed to the land is L2 per acre, but as the blook is considered to be the best in the whole
of the country, that in not at all excessive, It would only mean a payment of two shillings per acre per annum until the holder is itiolined to take up the freehold, provided, of course, that he complies with the regulations made under the Land Act, but we venture to say that when tliitt time arrives, the land will he worth a good deitl diovb tkn .£5 per acre. A very simple comparison will
show that we nro not exaggerating. The leases of the endowment of the Wellington City Corporation in the Mangahao Block were sold by
public auction by Messrs Lowes and lonis on Saturday, and the average realized' was very nearly double that of the rent asked by the Government for the land offered in. the Mangatainoke Block, And there is this difference, that in the case of-the former there is no contract under which the lessee can obtain a title as a
freeholder, while in the latter lie has only to wait for the expiration of a given period, and to comply with certain conditions, which are not at all oppressive, to become entitled to a Crown grant. The situation' of the block is also most favorable. It is in close proximity to the very promising settlement of Eketahuna, and the dis-
tance from Masterton is not very great. A meeting of the members will, probably be convened to consider the offer made, and we have no doubt that it will be readily endorsed, We can
my this, that if any of the members wish to drop out, their places can be filled twenty-fold, ( 1

A man in this district, hearing that a summons had been taken out against him, recently rode forty miles to get it. Many a man would ride a similar distance to avoid getting it, though he would find that the dearest in the long run.
The horse of a man who left Masterton a day or two ago for Tinui was found on the road in the Mungapakeha valley with the saddle where the girths ought to have been, and nothing was seen of the man that day, We have not heard since then whether he has beon found or not,

The shearers left the station in the best of spirits.
A somewhat amusing incident occurred at the sale of the Wellington City Corporation leases on Saturday afternoon, A hardy Norseman bid up to 4s lOd per acre for a section, at which price it was knocked down to him, He, however, imagined at the timo that he was purchasing the freehold, and having discovered his mistake he threw up the bargain before the close of the sale. The section was put up again, aud was then disposed of at 4s (id, which was the highest price of the lot.

Mrs Scott, the lady evangelist, finished her services at the Wesleyan Church, Carterton, on Saturday evening, and although the weather has been very boisterous during the week, she had very fair audiences every night, and a goodly number were brought to the penitent form. During this week it was arranged that she is to hold services at the outlying places, beginning at Dalefield yesterday morning. A frost, which proved most disastrous to fruit and potatoes occurred on Sunday morning'. The southerly rain which had prevailed all day Saturday ceased shortly after sunset, but the wind remained south, and the atmosphere was thoroughly iey. By sunrise the next day. all the small pools of water in the town were frozen over, and in small vessels standing outside ice of the thickness of a penny was found. ■ The early potato crop has been almost utterly destroyed in exposed situations, and plums and cherries might have been picked up in bucketsful in every garden wfyeye they are grown, Grapevines have Uso suffered severely. We understand that the frost was experinced all through the valley, and even in some parts of the East Coast district.
