THE SHOW DAY.
The tradespeople of Masterton, appear to be divided in their opinions as to whether Wednesday next, the day on which the opening show of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association is to be held, should be observed as a public holiday or not. While some of them appear to be quite prepared to close, others are inclined to keep open, on the ground that it would be a very good business day with them, We thipk that the matter could very easily be arranged. There would be very little business doing during the afternoon, and if shopkeepers who object to th<3 holiday would therefore keep open during the morning, closing, say, at noon or very shortly atter, they would lose nothing, while they would afford themselves and their, employees an opportunity to visit the showground. They might, if they chose, op<m again during the time that the bulk of the people are leaving, The Borough Council has decided that the day shall be proclaimed a public holiday, and business people will, no doubt, be invited by His Worship the Mayor to observe it. It is, of course, open to them to disregard the invitation, but we do not think that there aro many who would think of doing that, Whatever may bo done, it is to be hoped that a general understanding will be come to on tho subject. The day is not only an important one for the Agricultural Society, for it must not be forgotten that the Spring Show of the Horticultural Society takes place on the same day at tho Theatre, and that tho dfiors will be open during tho evening,
