New York, November 13,
Telegrams have been received in this city from Galveston, Texas, stating that a disastrous conflagration is raging in that city. The fire broke out this morning, and all efforts to suppress it have up to the present been unsuccessful, Sixty blocks of buildings have already been destroyed, and damage to the extent of upwards of four million dollars has already been done. Thousands of inhabitants have been rendered houseless and destitute. Brisbane, November 16. The manager of the Queensland National Bank in tlus city received a telegram to-day from Cooktown, confirming previous information respecting the massacre of the New South Wales Geographical Society's Exploring Expedition at Fly River, New Guinea. The telegram further states that a search party is being organised by Mr Douglas to ascertain beyond doubt the fate of the expedition. Adelaide, November 14. The early estimates of the South Australian wheat crop, stives an expected yield at from three to four bushels'an acre, Sydney, Novembsr 18. The Plenary Council was opened today by His Eminence Cardinal Moran. There was a large and representative gathering present, including fifteen Bishops, numerous clergy, and thousand of laity.' Dr Redwood, Bishop of Wellington, preached an opening sermon. The procession which followed was of a most imposing character, Cooktown, November 15. The island schooner Ellen Gowan, 1 which arrived here, brings news confirming the reported massacre at the Fly River of the members of the Australian Geographical expedition, Belgrade, November 14. War has been formally declared by Servia against Bulgaria, and the Servian troops have crossed. to Isaribrod, and are now advancing upon Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, under the command of King Milan, who has issued a proclamation, assigning- as his grounds for the invasion the violation by Prince Alexander of the Treaty of Berlin, and consequent provocation. Sofia, November 14. Prince Alexander, in an order of the day issued to the Bulgarian army, denounces the Servian invasion as cowardly .and treacherous, and calls upon all Bulgarian subjects to defend their homes and annihilate the invaders. later intelligence states that some 'sharp skirmishes have occurred between the Bulgarians and Servians, several men beinp killed and a large number wounded, The Bulgarians had rather the worst of it, and are reported to be retiring. . Calcutta, November 14. A British proclamation has been issued, formally announcing the deposition of King Theebaw from the throne ofßurmah, Major-General Prendergast, with the troops under his command, has arrived at Schaifetmyo, and an attack on the Burmese position at Minhlais imminent, London, Nouember 14. The total .quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom (g 1,500,000 quarters, Prime New Zealand frozen mutton remains at fourpence halfpenny per lb, The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. has declared a . dividend for the past half-year at the rate of eight i per cent, per annum.
