The Evening Post has the effrontery to say that "The Ministry do not propose, and never have proposed, to in any way deal with the loan outside of any authority given to them by Parliament, nor will they do anything which will delay or impede the construction of the North Island Trunk Railway." Even if that much is admitted, where is the money to bo advanced out of the. North Island Trunk Railway Loan to be spent ? Members of Parliament who ought to know are under the impression that no such advance is required, We have to acknowledge tho receipt of a copy of the programme of the first annual December show of tho Wairarapa and East Coast Postoral and Agricultural Society, which is to be held at Carterton on the 2nd prox, The catalogue is an extensive one, and includes pot plants, cut flowers, fruits, vegetables, farm produce, local productions, apiarian goods, poultry, pigeons, canaries, and dogs. The value of the prizes is affixed throughout. The programme may bo inspected at our office, The Directors of the" Golden Crown Gold Mining Company, Terawhiti, have been holding, we (Evening Press) understand, almost continuous meetings of late, arranging for a large crushing (some hundreds of tons) of their quartz at the Albion Company's battery. A strong opinion has been expressed that the Golden Crown Co. were thoroughly -justified in purchasing machinery at once for themselves, so prosperous are appearances at their mine; but it is expected that after defraying expenses of this' crushing, a surplus sum will remain sufficient, or to a great extent at any rate, to obtain new machinery. The New Zealand Times quotes figures fromreturns for the past twenty-eight weeks just published, to show that the railway charges in New Zealand are too low, and shows that while there is an increase in the tariff there is also an increase in the percentage of working expenses. Unfortunately for our contemporary, he has chosen a wrong period.During a considerable portion of the time numbers of passengers have travelled at reduced rates to and from the Exhibition, while the Government also carried articles to be exhibited free of charge. As these would necessarily increase working expenses, it is to be presumed that they were included in the gross tonnage returns. The argument referred to therefore goes for nothing, New Zealand mutton was recently put to a thorough test at home. We learn from a private source that a prominent breeder of Hampshire downs recently held a sale, and after the sale he gave a dinner to which he invited twelve wellknown and leading butchers. On the table were placed two legs of mutton, one from a sheep of his own breeding, and the other imported from Naw Zealand, Each of the guests was asked to partake of each, and thou to express his opiniou on them. The result of the voting was ten in favor of the New Zealand meat, and two in favor of the home product. A better test could scarcely be imagined, and the result speaks volumes for the quality of our meat, A very destructive fire has occurred on Messrs Cockbum Hood and Walker'srun, Glondonald, this week. A large quantity of bush has been felled on the run this season, and men were still working at it, when, on Wednesday, a boy who was lighting a fire for the purpose of boiling a billy, accidentally setfire to the felled bush. The flames spread with extraordinary rapidity, the dry summer weather having rendered the leaves and twigs highly inflammable, and several tents that were near the spot whero the fire started wero burnt down. Yesterday the fire had travelled over about a thousand acres of felled hush, and it is still burning j hut as the trunks and larger branches of the trees are still green, only the small wood is being consumed, Shortly after the fire started all the hands on the place, numbering about fifty, were set to work to clear a lane through the fallen timber, but, though they worked with a will, their efforts -were unsuccessful as the flames crept across and drove them away. The loss to Messrs Hood and Walker is a Very serious one, and may be • estimated at fully £2OOO, as the bum has been completely spoilt, and they will be unable to sow grass seed during the autumn, while tho land also remains covered with logs, The fire started on Patterson's contract, and it is feared that it will cross the Taueru and obtain a hold on some felled bush on Manawa station. In the Exhibition there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by' Mr Field, of Dunedin, The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by Mr.Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street. Parties wishing to purchase any of the above can now seloc them, to be delivered on the Ist of November.—AnvT Couglii, Colds, Bronchitk, <£&, are quickly cured -by using Baxter's celebrated "Lung Preserver," This okL established, popular medicine, is plea? sant to the palate, and highly extolled by the members of the medical, legal, and clerical professions.
