RAILWAY RETURNS.
The traffic returns of the New Zealand railways for the four weeks ending October 10th last appear in the Gazette. The total receipts were £71,016 8s 9d, as against £70,018 0s 4d during the corresponding period last year, The proportion of' expenditure was 68,98 as against 67,16, The receipts on the North j Island once more" show an increase, and those from the Middle Island a decrease, The total revenue on the Welhngton-Masterton line was £SOOB 8s 7d, as against £4389 4s lOd. The number of passengers carried was 20,160, as against 13,541. The percentage of expenditure on receipts was 71.20 as against 77.57.
