THE POHANGINA REEE.
A.b yesterday's meetins of the Waste Land Board, the Commissioner, Mr J. W. A. Marchant, who haaj ust returned from a visit to these reefs, presented the following report :—"On the sth,and Gth inst. I visited the' locality of the Pohangina reef, and found that the workings were filled in, so that no trace of the reef was to be seen. Owing to this, Mr Anderson, the prospector, could not pick up any stone similar to tliafc which he got out for crushing and testing, and which is said to contain both gold and silver. The formation appeared to be slate, and similar to that in the Gorge. There was only one man upon the ground beside the survey party; but before I left two others arrived, and 1 understood that about 120 men have visited the place from time to time. Two old miners, with whom I discussed the mattor, stated that the reef has not been opened for their inspection, and that until they see it they cannot give' a positive opinion, but they have been quite unable to find gold either in the gully or adjacent country, with this exception, that a jeweller in Wanganui had found gold in a piece of stone which they had picked up in a stream. Tho reef from which the stone had issued was unknown to them. The prospectors state that they are about to open up the workings. Until this is done and the reef exposed for inspection it would be be inadvisable to offer a definite opinion as to the auriferous character of the ground, of which the proofs are not conclusive to outsiders. The attached plan shows the locality. Tlie distance from Aahuret is about 21 miles, and is'quite passable for horses when the river is down, and not in flood, the route being in the valley of the Pohangina," A Palmerston North telegram received since, then states that Mr Dundas, surveyor at Pohangina, has sent a letter to a friend here, asking him at once to apply for a goldmining lease of certain land. It is stated that the real reef, with very satisfactory indications, has been discovered by them some distance from Anderson's working, The news has caused excitement here, and other applications are being sent in. Full details are not yet obtainable. • " ,
