.To Herberts, tyardell, Esquire, Resident Magistrate, Wfiirarapa. r" I>W yoiirrcmpval from this district to the largerdistrict of Wellington, it is the desire of the residents here to express to you the regret which they feel at your ceasing to have charge of a district over wjiich you, as Resident Magistrate have presided fqr pjore than 25 years, During that time your 1 administration from the Bench has'been marked by the ability, justice, a}}d i)]eroy, which are so absolutely essential to the performance of such important duties a? those which you have had to discharge; and your desire to lend a willing ear and hand to those in distress has ever been noticeable. We feel that the Wairarapa district is, in a very g,pnsiderabje ,degre§, indebted to you for its welfare in year? gone by, for in the time pf the Native" disturbances your tact, flea], firrnnsi®, and determination, were doubtless the weans) of averting hostilities between the two races..
