The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1885. THE FIRE BRIGADE.

We mentioned yesterday tb&t the members of the Fire Brigade hatf met on Wednesday night, and that, there being nothing from the Council before them, they bad given up their uniforms etc,, mil] locked up the place, Plainly put, Masterton, a town with upwards of three-thousand inhabitants, a portion of which is very closely built, had no Fire Brigade, and no moans for extinguishing tire. We ask the Borough, Council why was there nothing put before the members of tjbe Brigade to consider 1 A Committee of the Council was appointed to .deal with the question, and ample power, was given to m#ke whatever arrangements might appear proper. The membere of the Brigade, who h.ad already passed a resolution to the effect that they would disband, were then askfed to continuo for another fortnight, and the resolution was agreed to.

The fortnight wus, jiowover, allowed to.expire, and' the members of the Brigade, having received' no overtures, naturally concluded that their services were not required. Move than that, thev have declared that they would not now join any Brigade that might be formed by the Council. The resolution was not without its effect upon the Council, the Mayor and several members of which . quickly realized its position. A meeting of persons willing to join the new Brigade was, therefore, convened for last night, when, we are pleased to say, all the difficulties that stood in .the way were overcome. Nearly , all the members of the old Brigade joined.the new one, and as there is.now a prospect of the plant being placed in a state of efficiency, there is no reason why the town should, not have a, Brigade : that will befound able to give a good account of itself in case of emergency,
