HOSPITAL BOARD.
The first statutory meeting of the Wat rarapa Hospital Board was held at the Institute yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs M. Caselberg (Masterton), W. (J. Buchanan (Greytown), W, H. Beetham(Waii'arapaEast), andH. Bunny (Wairarjipa West). Mr Oaselberg explained tljat lje hat| been appointed by tqe Goveijiment" to represent Masterton, and requested tq preside at the first meeting, Ho had con, vened tho meeting for 3 p.m. that day, thinking that would be the most convenient time, He saw they all had the Ast, and hoped that they had made themselves perfect in it.
Mr Bunny said he was afraid that they would have to go somewhere else to find anyone, perfect in it (laughter), All they qpilld'-do was tp -feel fcljejr way step by Step, -■
The Chairman read a circular letter from the Premier's office explaining that the district came under Class 2, being a district which was partially united with another. A letter was received from Mr J, C, Bo^jngton,'chairman of the Masterton Hospital' Committee,'notifying that jt was their intention to have the Hospital estafc Med as a separate Institution, Mr Buchanan explained that it was the intention of the Greytown HospitalCommittee to take a similar step. , Some discussion took place as to the course the business of the meeting should" take, Mr Bunny, suggesting that they should simply appoint a Chairman, and fjx the time and place of the next pieet-
ing. Thoy would hold a united meeting on the 17th
Mr Buchanan said ho agreed with' Mr Bunny, but they would have to take the question of funds into consideration at an early date,
Mr Bunny moved, That all appointments except that of Chairman be allowed to stand over till after the meeting on the 17th inst.
Seconded by Mr Buchanan and carried, Mr Buchanan thought that Greytown would bo the most convenient place of meeting as they could all return again to their homes the same day. He moved that Greytown be the place of meeting, Seconded by Mr Bunny The Chairman thought that so far us the business of the Board was concerned the bulk of it would concern Masterton. Mr Bunny argued that Greytown was the older place, and also had the oldest hospital. The Chairman moved as.an amendment that Masterton be the place of meeting. Mr Beetham seconded the amendment. Mr Buchanan said they should also take the population of the country districts into consideration if they looked to that of tho towns.
The Chairman said that even from that point of view Masterton should have the prefereuce, as the population of the town of Masterton had increased by about a thousand since the last census, while settlement in the Forty Mile Bush was alro rapidly expanding, The question was then put' Messrs) Buchanan and Bunny voting in favor of Greytown, and the Chairman and Mr Beeth am in favor of Masterton. Mr Bunny claimed that the Chairman oould not exeroise a vote at all under the Vet, while he was Chairman,
The Chairman laughingly replied that Mr Bunny was proving too much, Mrßuchanan also held that the Chairman had neither an original nor a casting vote.
The Chairman said he feltquite certain that lie was right, but he was willing to all iw the matter to stand over till after the meeting on the 17th instance. This course was agreed to. Mr Beetham moved that Mr Oaselberg l be Chairman. <
After, some delay, the Chairman remearkecj tliat it wag not his intention to s oond the motion. He suggested that t ey should vote by ballot, Mr Bunny said that they would then •stand in the same position. Ho argued that the Chairman had no rigljt to vote.
Mr It, whq, a{ the invitation of. the Chairman, was acting as, Secretary, remarked that the Chairman had ruled otherwise.

The Chairman said he did not think that Mr Brown thought of dictating, By what ho knew of him nothing was further from his mind,
The proposal to take a ballot was then agreed to, Mr Bunny receiving the votes of Mr Buchanan and himself, and the Chairman and Mr Beetham votiiig for each other. Mr-Bunny was then declared to have been duly elected. Tins concluded the business,
