The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1885.
Master S, Minifie, of Bannister Street, had about 20 fowls killed by dogs this morning. A shearer's cook, and'tenders for carting wool are wanted by Mr Jas Stuckey, of Ranpitumau. The Masterton Fire Brigade held a meeting at the station last night, and, as there was nothing before them from the Council, they proceeded formally to disband. Before doing so the Town Clerk, who attended unofficially, accompanied by Or Muir, stated to the members that the Council had taken over the assets and liabilities of the Brigade and had appointed a committee to form a new Brigade, The Brigifde then handed in their acoutrements to the Engine keeper. The private property of the Brigade, such as a book case, dydrant won by competition, and other thiijgs, were placed temporarily "in the hands of the Engine keeper, and a resolution was passed that in the event of a new Brigade being started with a fair proportion of the old members in it, the property should be handed over to it. Property owners and the public generally will bear in mind the fact that there is now .no organised body of men to cope with a fire in the event pf one occurring before the new Brigade is fprmejcl »

Exception was taken at yesterday's meeting of the Benevolent Society to tho title of "Baron," assumed by Mollwo, the man who had been assisted by the Society, While no proof was adduced as to whether Mollwo was or was not entitled to take rank with the nobles of Russia—or any other country—it was generally thought that, in his relations with the Society, the title might bo judiciously dropped. It evidently seemed incongruous that a real live Baron should be reduced to breaking stones for his rations.—Times. Among the entries of Hereford cattle at the Pastoral Society's show at Carterton yesterday, Mr Stuckey'a name was very prominent, and many of tho visitors were under the impression that ho really was ono of the exhibitors. Mr Stuckey, however, only roturned from his trip to England a day or two before tho show, and though his manager had made a number of entries in his absence, he did not consider them in such a state that they would have done him the credit ho would have desired. Mr Stuckey's Hereford herd is one of tho best in New Zealand, and the absence of representatives from it left a gap in the classes for them that was very noticeable.
In the Exhibition there is one special oxhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, tho wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin. Tho whole of the oxhibit has been purchased by Mf Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-strcot. Parties wishing to purchase any of the above can now solcp tl}em, to be delivered on the Ist of November.—Apvt Cough, Colds, fironMk tk, are quickly cured by using Baxter's celebrated "Lung Preserver."
