In the course of his speech while formally declaring the Industrial Exhibition closed, His Excellency the Governor is reported in the Evening Press to have spoken as foHqws on the depression of which we have heard so much of late:—"lt was a iiommon tiling to say .that there was something like depression in the colony. Well, he could only say that if the people were suffering from depression they bore it very calmly, and further, that they bore it in common with all the nations of the earth. He was sure we should go on increasing in prosperity (is time advanced, and we must take that pru dent course which all men adopted in their private affairs to see this country advance by rapid strides towards that prosperity which he was confident was its destination, He need have no fear as to the future of the colony, but lie would recommend that we should not go too fast," Sir William Jervois has evidently studied the aspect of trade throughout the world very closelv, and we think that he has come to a very reasonable conclusion. He is not given to flattering upon all occasions, but prefers to talk common sense. In the present instance we think he has given a very fair fore-shadowing on an approaching change for the better,
