PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SPECIAL SERVICES.
Agreeably to arrangement mado by the Presbytery of Wellington, a series of special religious services will be held in the Presbyterian Church, Maaterton, during the present week (Saturday excepted), commencing at half-past seven o'clock. The object of these services is stated to be—to awaken the careless, guide the anxious, reclaim backsliders, stimulate christians, and win souls, At the conclusion of the services on Friday, thankofferings will be received to defray incidental expenses connected with the mission, The services will be conducted by the Rev, David Fulton (pastor loci), Rev. J. K. Elliott, Wellington, Rev. David Rogers, Mr Aitken, Rev. J. N. Buttle, ana Rev, Mr Cecil. Yesterday, the Rev Mr Elliott conducted Divine Service in the forenoon and evaning in the presence of large and devout congregations, In the forenoon he preached an impressive and instructive preparatory sermon, in which he specially alluded to the beneficial effects and spiritual good which flowed from the revival services held di|rjis periods of the Churoh's hjsfcqry, In arousing the careless and indifferent to a due sense of their religious duty and responsibility, causing many to attend their respective places of worship, and to devote themselves more earnestly to the advancement of the cause of religion. The reverend gentleman's discourses were thoroughly evangelical and practical, and the arguments contained In the texts chosen were unfoldedin simple earnest language, and elucidated by apt illustrations. At the close of the evening service, a prayer meeting was held, the greater part of congregation remaining tq take part jn jt, An important feature in the services referred to were the explanatory remarks made by the preacher- qf certain parages in the portions of scripture read.
