An attempt, which was fortunately unsuccessful, was made to shoot M, Freycinet to-day, The man fired a shot at him, but was arrested by the bystanders and placed in the custody of the police before he could fire another shot. The prisoner preserves a reticent attitude, and will not divulge the motive that actuated him. October 30. Further inquiries have revealed the fact that the would-be assassin of M, Freycinet is a Corsican, He admitted having premediated the attempt, but lias not stated his reason for the crime, Sydney, October 30. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on the Postmaster General (M, See) to-day in reference to the new San Francisco mail service, Mr See, in reply to the deputation, said the Government were bound to cany on the new service until the question had been decided by Parliament, the contract having been signed conjointly with New Zealand, subject to the approval of the New South Wales Parliament. A public meeting was afterwards held, at which resolutions were passed condemning the new mail contract, and pronouncing strongly in favor of the continuance of a direct service. A match has been arranged between Beach and Matterson for the championship of the world and £2OO aside. The contest will talce plaoe on tltf 19th December.
