Mr F. Chapman has brought to our office a fine sample of peas grown in his garden in Victoria-street, This is the first we have seen this year. Gooseberries of very fair size are also being exhibited in the various fruit shops.
Messrs Price and Dickson's new announcement appears in thejr column on our third page. Their windows will be lit up this evening for displaying theirnew specialities. There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Delta Lodge, L.U.F., held last night, It was decided to assist in the annual sportsof the Amalgamated Friendly Societies if they were hold on Boxing Day. There was one initiation and two proposals, Mr Harris, secretary to the Tiraumea Small Farm Association, has received a telegram from the Under-Secretary for Crown Lands, stating tl(at t)]e Minister has fixed the valuation for the Tiraumea Block at 22s Gil per acre. The Examiner thinks, under .the circumstances, the Association has heen very faiily treated. All our exchanges that have as yet com o to hand have perpetuated an error which evidently occurred in the telegraphic transmission of Sir Julius Vogel's letter to Hie Chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. The Stratford route in connection with the North Island Trunk Rajlpy is termed the straightforward route, Bejng apytjiing but a straight route, the alteration is not an improvement.
Those who are inclined to speculate in any of the privileges in connection with the annual show of tho Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral Society, are reminded that they will be offered at public auction by Messrs Lowes and lorns at the Council Chambers, Carterton, at noon to-morrow. The entries bejng much larger than last year, it may fairly be assumed that there will also be an increased attendance,
We remind our readers of Messi 8 Lowes and lorns' sales to-morrow. At 2 o'clock they Bell at their rooms a quantity of new and secondhand furniture. At 3 o'clock they sell a long list of flowers on account of Mr Park, whose name is a sufficient guarantee as to the quality of the plants, which are now on view at the auction rooms. After the sale of flowers, they offer, on account of a Chriatchurch firm, a quantity of bankrupt jerelry, etc, An amusing way of proving himself wrong has been adopted by our local contemporary with regard to the Masterton school district question. In criticising the report of Mr Lee, the Inspector, against tho division, lie says" We are inclined to think with the Rev, James Patterson, that the views of parents and house-holders are of more value than the opinion of a peripatetic officer." Exactly; we are of precisely the same opinion. The large majority of the householders of Mastertun have signed a petition against the division, anil that should really be sufficient to settle the matter.
In the R,M, Court this morning, before Mr Stratford, R.M„ Patrick Carr was charged with trespass, on the information of Miss Jeans, Mr Beard appeared in support of the charge, and Mr Bunny for the defence. As all the witnesses for the defence were not present, the case was ajdjourned till Tuesday liexfc Mr Carr s the contractor fpr j:)je formation of Worksop Road, and it appears thfit Jie had been advised that he might take gravel fruit) a certain spot near the Waipoua river, which Miss Jeans claims as part of her property. Having refused to take the warning given, the information was laid. ..
The returns of the cheese shipped to England by tjie Woodville Factory are now to hand, and the Examiner regrets to say the experiment has proved a failure. The cheese realised only 3Gs per pvt. in the London market, A quantity was found to be in rather a baa state, and the auctioneers remark " the others were perfectly sound, and of excollent quality," Mr Fountains in aletcei toMrWagstaff, says, " Your consignment reached here at a most unfortunate time. Cheshire cheese, the week before, fell 20s per cwt, and the market was regularly swamped by American," The Directors have thus been rather unfortunate in the choice of the Engljsh placet,
In the Exhibition there 15 f)(]8 gpepjfil exhibit, whiohis greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin, The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by MrThorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street, Parties wishing to purchase any of the aboye can now.seloe them,- to be delivered ,qi) fcjie Ist of November,—Advt,

His Excellency the Governor has intimated that it is his intentien to bo present at the annual show of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society. We are indebted to Mr W. C. Buchanan, President of the Society, for this information.
The United Importers' Company held its annual meeting at Wellington on Wednesday, Tho balance sheet showed a small profit, which was, however, exceeded by the salaries due. The directors propose to make material reductions in theiexpenditure, and to commence with their own lionorarian.
Mr F. H. Wood held a most successful sale at the Taratahi yesterday, the stock entered having the effect of inducing a large number of buyers to attend. All stock entered was quitted at good prices, and the horses sold by the trustees of the late Mr McLaren were in good demand; there being some spirited bidding,

Mr F. H. Wood reports sale of stock at his Masterton yards on Wednesday last all lines offered being disposed of at the following figures Three-year-old steers, £5 Is to £5 B3; twq : yoar do. £3 2s (id to £3 7s (id; heiferg, £215 to £3, A few passed in at the sale, but were afterwards quitted at good prices. After disoussing the proposal of Sir Julius Vogel regarding the North Island Trunk railway loan, the Auckland Star concludes—"The prince of political conjurers, we should add, is not only profuse, but gracious. He adds to the telegram this delicious clause—' 1 have given you this lengthy explanation, but, of coipe, tjie simple answer tp your question is Government does not intent to do anything but what the law requires, l We thank thee, Julius, for teaching us that word, hut we claim that action in this matter should proceed on lines of higher law than that of the hucksterer and stoc]c jobber—fhe law, to Ayit, of political honesty and good faith, If we get what that law reqqires, wo shall get the million loan devoted, as poon a? raised, to the trunk railway to poiinect the penfcrep pf population in the North Island! It is just possible that Ministers hope by this procedure to coerce the Northern members into sanctioning the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway. There could be no more stupendous mistake committed. It is not with the warmth of a fervid prophet. w])o dimly forsees calamity, but with the calm assurance of a matljematician stating a demonstration that we warn Ministers that the result of persevering in this policy will not be only certain defeat of the infamous railway party, but the downfall of the Stout-Vogel Government, That is ,vhat another 'law' will reauire—tl}6 }a\y qf retribution, which, though sometimes deferred in its operation, is unfailing and sure."
