Sergt Price is oxpectod to arrive in Masterton to take charge of the Police District on Tuesday next. Mrs Scott will continue the evangelistic services at the Wesleyan Church this and to-morrow evening, To-morrow afternoon there will be a special service for women only. We have received a copy of Messrs Donald Reid and Co.'s Farmer's Circular, a pamphlet published by a well-known Dunedin firm of auctioneers, stock and station agents,- The little volume contains some very useful information on subjects pertaining to the farm and Btation.

By referring to an advertisement in another column, it will be seen that the well-known thoroughbred horse The Premier will stand at his owner's farm, Taratahi, this season, The siro of such performers as The Administrator and Consul, is certain to be sought after by breeders.

Mr Jones, of the Foresters' Arms, Greytown, has for sale a good useful hack, to carry a lady or gentleman; also a double seated buggy, in very good order, and at a low price. He is also disposing of his present 'bus to make way for a more commodious one which is being built for him by Mr D. Cameron. The 4th November next, the day of the Carterton Stock Show, has been declared a Bank holiday. The Masterton Pastoral Society will not be so lucky this year in that respect, as the application that was made to the Banks was too late to have the pr iclamation properly made. Next year the matter will no doubt be remedied.

Once more we are called upon to contradict the statement that Masterton cannot lmve a second school without being divided into two school districts, and that the decision of the Board against the division means that no second school is to be built, It suits certain parties to circulate such reports, which have, however, not the slightest foundation in fact. The second school will be erected just as soon without as with a second committee.

We have been requested to direct attention to the fact that to-morrow will be the Inst day 011 which tickets 011 "Lcos"' sweep on the New Zealand Cup can be obtained. The drawing will take place to-morrow evening, so that the winning numbers may be published on Saturday, which is the last day allowed by the Act passed last session, "Leo" offers an excellent programme —we know of none better or fairer in the colony, and if it fills there will be very handsome prizes.

A proof that strong prejudice against frozen meat still exists has just come under our notice, A passenger by a recent steamer from Home to New Zealand persistently refused to touch meat because he knew that some of it aboard was kept in a frozen state, and he was afraid that the stewards might give him some of it, Perhaps the fine grass-fed mutton which ho has since eaten will tend to change his ideas on the subject, though the main objection appears to be the freezing process. At the meeting of the Education Board yesterday, Mr Lee, the Inspector, laid on the table an interim report on the schools he had inspected. The following is the percentage of passes, and the condition of the schools: —Kaiwarra, 79 per cent., good; Johnsonville, 83 per cent., very good; Korokoro, 63 per cent., fair; Tawa Flat, 86 per cent., good; Pahautanui, 71 per cent., good; Featlierston, 71 per cent., fair; Wliitoman's Yalley, 93 per cent,, good; Karori, 75 per cent,, fair; Oliariu, 70 per cent,, poor; Porirua, 50 per cent., moderate; Judgeford, 95 per cent., good; Horokiwi, 75 per cent., fair. Those schools which have the highest percentage are small ones. Writing to the New Zealand Times, the Yen. Archdeacon Stock says:—ln the list of defensive mixtures to prevent blights, one simple but most efficacious remedy has been omitted. Wide-mouthed bottles half full of any sweet compound form a trap that few flying insects can resist. In England peach-trees are thus commonly protected against wasps. Four large bottles would protect a large tree. The pear slu? and many other pests would be kept down by the mother insect taking a drink of this sweet stuff before settling down to her work, Moth catchers secure raie specimens by smearing a tree with treacle, and watching patiently for the moths attracted by the smell, The insects caught should be, of course, thoroughly destroyed when the bottle is cleansed and refilled.

At the Resident Magistrates' Court, Featherston, on Monday, before James Donald and G. Reynolds, J.P.'s, a lad named Edward Shirley, was charged with stealing, on 30th April last, one hand saw, the property of the Government of New Zealand, The lad pleaded guilty to finding the article, but thought it was lost and of no value, The Bench considered, as the case was of a trivial nature, although proved, they would, under sec. 190 of the J.P. Act, discharge the boy, having regard for his youth and inexperience, but would caution him and all other lads that they should understand that they were not allowed to appropriate anything they found lying about, In such cases it was their duty to deliver up those articles to the police, With this wholesome advice, says the Standard, after commending Constable Smith for preferring the charge, the case was dismissed,

The Committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society has altered the conditions of the Leaping Match which is to take place on the show day. The high leap is abolished, and in its place there will be two consecutive hurdle jumps and a water jump in one run. In one respect this seems an improvement. We think, however, that there will be not a little difficulty in judging, and consequently dissatisfaction. If, for instance, all the horses go over, are the judges to award the first prize to the horse that goes over in the best style ? If they did, only one of those who made the entries would be satisfied. It may perhaps be intended to repeat the runs, raising the hurdle each time, hut as the water jump could not very well be widened at the same time, the difficulty would only be partially removed. The leaping match is always one of the most attractive features of these shows, and it would be a pity to see it become even a partial failure.

A cricket match between the Wellington Star and the Masterton Clubs takes place on the 9th November on the Park Oval. In view of this event, the local players should go in for a little more practice. A fine silver cup, representing the special prize offered by the N. Z, Loan and Mercantile Agency Company in connection with the forthcoming show of the Wairarapa Pastoral Society, is now being shown in the window of Messrs Littlejohn & Son, jewellers. To show the rapidity with which goods are delivered from the Home steamers, we may mention that a box consigned to a gentleman residing in Masterton came out in the lonic, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday, and was delivered in Masterton yesterday (Wednesday). A good deal of excitement was shown yesterday, when it became known that Mrs Greeks was missing from her home, at Carterton, and also one of her children, a little girl. _ It appears, from what. I hear, writes our correspondent, that when her husband got home from his work rather late on Tuesday evening, she was not at home, and he at once made enquiries among the neighbors as to whether they had seen anything oflier, Oneof them said she saw Mrs Greeks and the little girl going along the railway line between five and six pan. Mr Greeks immediately gave information to Constable Darby, and, as soon as it was light enoughtosee anything, asearchparty went out, with tlio constable, in search of the missing woman and child, After some hours search through the bush and elsewhere, she was found, with the child, lying beside a log in the bush opposite the Taratahi Hotel. They were at once conveyed back to their home, luckily without any harm, Great fears were entertained, especially for the child, as the woman is of unsound mind and is very spiteful and violent at times, when the fits come on her. Dr Beard has visited her some two or three times, but it has happened 011 the best of her days, so that he has not been able to ascertain anything to warrant him in giving a certificate for her removal to the asylum ; but I hear that she is now going to be admitted to the Masterton Hospital for a feiv days, so that she may be under proper medical supervision, In the Exhibition there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin. The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by Mr Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street. Parties wishing to purchase any of the above can now selee them, to be delivered on the Ist of November,—Advi,
