. United Press Association, Wanoanui, Oct. 22. ' J. W, Jackson's stables were burned down last night. A colt by Mufti— Cheshire Lass, and Restive (winner of the Selling Race at New Plymouth), and the purebred bull Duke of Denvent, wero destroyed in the buildings, the flames having too great a hold to allow their being taken out. The insurances on the building were in the South British, £2OO. There were no insurances on the stock. The origin of the fire is unknown. Woodville, this day. A fatal accident occurred yesterday evening on the Tamaki contract of the Napier-Woodville line by a fall of earth, A man named Peter Viderup was killed instantaneously, and Peter Neilson had both arms broken. Auckland, this day. Dr A. Young, Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, died yesterday. An attempt has been made to cut down the suspension bridge across thocemetory gully. Several of the stays were cut, as with a tomahawk. A telegram fromßotorua states that an old Maori woman named Kahiliotoe was shamefully beaten and kicked about by her nephew Arekatera, of Wairoa lake, Tarawera. She is not quite right in her mind, and was in the habit of wandering about the bush for days by herself, which caused her people must trouble. The reason given for the nephew kicking her about the legs was to prevent her wandering about, Her death is daily expected. She is without covering, and in great agony, her legs being twisted right round. Wellington, this day, It is understood that the Government propose to promote Colonel Sir G. Whitmore to bo Brigadier or Major General. This has been considered only right, as the commandants in the other colonies are generals, and have not taken altogether as many men under their command as Colonel Whitmore. Tne new steam launch, which has been constructed for the Defence Department, will be launched to-morrow, and will be named the "Ellen," after Mrs Ballance, who will perform the ceremony.
