Tlie Hon, J. Ballance has been appointed Commissioner of State Forests. Mr ,J, Young, ironmonger, of Wellington, advertises a' large stock of sheep shears, The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Stonehenge Lodge, U.A.O.D, wilt be held this evening at the Foresters' Hall, Mr G. H, Scales offers a reward of £2 for the recovery of a fox terrier that is supposed to have come to the Wairarapa by last Friday afternoon's train. Administrator and Consul are both scratched for tho Birthday Cup of the Wairarapa Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, It is understood that they are going South, In another column Mr G. Young returns thanks to the firemen andinunerous other persons who assisted in removitighis furniture on the occasion of the fire yesterday afternoon. The Executive Committee of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Society held a meeting yesterday afternoon, when the catalogue of prizes to be offered at the ensuing show was finally considered and passed.

Mr T. E. Chamberlain having resigned his seat on the Masterton Road Board for No 3 Sub-division, Mr Wilsone, Returning Officer for the district, announces that an election to fill the vacancy will take place on Wednesday, November 11th, Nominations close on tho 30th inst. Among the additional special prizes that have boen presented to the Masterton Pastoral and Agricultural Society is ore valued at £lolos from Messi'3 LittleJohn & Soils, which is to be givon to the exhibitor securing the highest number of points in prizes, Mr D. Anderson, jun., grocer, of Wellington, also offers £2 2s for a very practical purpose, namely, for fresh butter, and salt butter prepared for export.

Messrs Braithwaite and Buchanan have, says tho Standard, made arrangements with the agent of the De Laval Cream Separator Company at the Exhibition, to have a cream separator at work at the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society's Grounds on the Show Day. We hope our farmers will watch the process of separating the cream from the milk, and judge for themselves the value of tho invention. The match between Hunt, of Sydney, and Woods, of Dunedin, for the short distant championship and £2OO, came; off at Dunedin on Saturday afternoon, The conditions were the best two out of three

events, Tho weather was excellent, Woods was a slight favorite for the match, The first event was 100 yards. Hunt got tho best of the start, and maintained his lead to the end. Time, lOsec, For tho second distance, of 220 yards, there was a good start. H unt was quickest away, and Wood was never able' to trouble" him. Time, 23 2-sth seconds, Hunt thus won the match, A large amount of money changed hands. From time to time we hear accounts of how ridicuously drawn up is the railway tariff. A merchant in town informs us (Chronicle) that a short time ago lie got four kegs of butter from New Plymouth by rail, on which he paid the absurdly high freight of 9s 9d, By steamer the charge would have been about 3s (id. In contrast with the example is that of some 70 or 80 empty kegs, which were also brought from New Plymouth to Wanganui. For these, although they took up a whole truck, the charge was only 14s Cd, Mr Vaile may not be infallible in all his arguments and facts, but there is no doubt, that there is ample scopo for reform in railwav matters. With commendable celerity the peoplo turn out at fires and carry out of the building whatever there is to bo saved, We notice, however, that if the building does not burn down, the crowd quietly disperses, and the occupant has the task set before him of getting his household goods in again as best he can. That this is no easy work can easily be imagined by anyone who has ever moved from one house to another. A fair illustration of this was furnished by the (ire at Mr G. Young's house yesterday. than ten minutes sufficed to empty the house of its contents, for there were at least between twenty and thirty pairs of hands at work. When t|>e danger had been averted the number was, hpweyor. found to be limited to two or three good nature.d female neighbors.

There wore two alarms of fire yesterday afternoon. TJie first was givon just as we were going to press, and it was then found that the chimney of Mr G. Young's house in Cole-street was ablaze. Fireman G, Dixon, and oneortwo others were quickly on the spot, and suppressed the flames, but not so effectually as had appeared to them, for about half an hour later smoke was seen issuing through the roof of the building, and the fite-bell being immediately rung with considerable vigor, the Fire Brigade, which had assembled on the first occasion, at once turned out with one of

their engines, They had, however, a considerable distance to travel, and having no outside help to take the heavy engine over a pretty rough road, and moreover finding no water when tliey got to the sceno, their services were not required. Almost immediately after the alarm, Messrs Papworth and G. Ward got on the roof, and several later arrival at once formed themselves into a gang to pass water to them. By this means the flames were prevented from getting a firm hold !of tho shingles. To extinguish them it was, however, found necessary to cut a hole in the roof, and this having been done, Fireman Mansell got through, and effectually quenched the fire with a few buckets of water. The fire is supposed to have originated through a flaw in the chimney. The house is a two storey one, of five or six rooms, and is the property of Mr R, J. Fitton. The damage done may be repaired at a cost of about five or six pounds.

In the Exhibition thero is 'one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mr Field, of Dunedin. The whole of the exhibit has been purchased by Mr Thorburn, the clothier, of Willis-street. Parties wishing to purchase any of the above .can now seloo them, to be delivered on the Ist pf November, —Advt.

' Captain Edwin telegraphed at 1.30 p.m. today •: — "-Bad • -weather ■ oxpected between north-west and west and south. Glass fall, but rising: within 12 hours." As a strong northerly gale lias been blowing all day in - Masterton, the prediction will hardly seem news. Mr W. E. Hall, the well-known surgeon dentist, has arrived in Masterton, and may be consulted at his usual rooms, Minto House, Chapel-street, to-day and to-morrow. Mr Hall informs us that it is his intention to devote a much larger portion of his time to the district.

Mr J. Ross has been appointed agent in the Wairarapa for the celebrated Howard twine binder, These machines rank among tho very best of their kind, as they combine durability with efficiency, capacity and ease of management. One of them is now on its way to Masterton, and will be on view at an early date, Further particulars will appear in our advertising columns in a day or two. A meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton Fire Brigade was held last night, there beingpresentMessrsMuir (Chairman), Wickerson, Williams, Hogg and Eastliope. The resolution passed at the last general meeting .of the Brigade, tendering the resignation of all the members, was received, and it was resolved to comply with the accompanying request to forward it to the Borough Council. There was uo other business. There was a thoroughly well'lilled house at the Theatre Royal last night on the occasion of the benefit tendered to Messrs Foley and Berkley by a number of amateurs in Masterton, A very full programme, which was not got through till half past eleven, had been prepared, and every item in it was thoroughly satisfactory to the audience, The first portion of the programme consisted of "Ruth's Romance." Next followed a concert in which Messrs Stanstield, F. G, Moore, Rapp, R. Gant and Miss Sutherland took part, MrsPaigeand Mr Keisenberg accompanying the vocalists on the Piano. All the songs were exceedingly well received. Mrs T, Wrigley also gavo a song, and received a most flattering eneore. " Perfection" was then put ou the boards with the following caste Sir Lawrence Paragon, Mr A, M, Bradbury; Charles Paragon, Mr C. M, Berkley, Sam (with song), Mr J. D, Foley; Kate O'Brien (the lady of Munster), Miss Beaufort; Susan (withsong),. Miss Sutherland. All the characters were well represented, and the actors were frequently applauded, the audience departing thoroughly satisfied with the evening's entertainment.
