ROUGH ON DEBTORS.
At the Wanganui District Court re-' cently, two debtors got rough treatment, In the case of D, Meads, late butcher at Marton, after hearing evidence, his Honor said the bankrupt's conduct had been extremely reprehensible. The case was a very shaky one indeed, and it was evident that the bankrupt had acted dishonestly, . Sad some of the charges been proved he would have felt it his duty to pass a much more severe sentence, but after careful consideration of the case he would sen* tence the debtor to imprisonment for pbq calendar month in. the. Wanganui gaol, without hard the costs to come out • of tha should there be any estate •' available,—The public examination of G, W, Woods was also held. Referring .. to this case, the Deputy Official Assignee said in his report that it was evident that the debtor's conduct was open to grave censure in allowing debts incurred far thq maintenance of himself and family tft remain unpaid while he spent lp. earn-, ings ii| trailing a racehorao. When application was for discharge he would consider it his duty to apply to His Honor to attach to the order, if granted, such conditions as to time and costs as would in his opinion meet the case,—His Honor said that it was a queer state of : affairs that a man should go training horses at his creditors' expense. If the facts were true he would recommend him 1 to pay some of the amounts, otherwise it l: " was very improbable that a discharge ' would be granted. There was no exspa■' for a man who was earning £2 aweej; living up to £3 at his creditors' expense. —The debtor said that he had' been reed into the court by a creditor, other- ; £ ise all would have been paid in full,
