BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

A meeting of the;, Wairarapa North Benevolent Society was held in the Institute yesterday. Present—Revs W. E. Paige (chairman), J. H Buttle, Miss Beard, Meßdames Paige, and Hacker, and the secretary, Mr T. C. D'Arcy. ' The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The treasurer reported that there was a balance of L 77 its lid in the bank, and 15s 6d in hand, making a total of L7BliJs sd, Sundry accounts,; amounting to L 26 3s (id, for goods supplied to several persons by authority of the committee at the last meeting, were passed for payment, Tho secretary's report-on the several, cases in haud was read, and his action in dealing with urgent cases approved. The various cases were dealt with on their merits, and grants were continued until the next monthly meeting in two or three instances. The case of Mrs Neal was brought up again, nothing having been heard of her husband, although enquiries had been made through the police. A grant of 10s per week was allowed her, and her rent, 3s per week, guaranteed for a term, Another family waß reported off the books, the head of the family having obtained work.

The Secretary was instructed to apply through Mr Gunderson for subscriptions in the Mauriceville district towards the Benevolent Society, relief having been given to a caso in that district for upwards of ten years. One case in which the husband had gone away to obtain work, leaving his wife, who was too ill to work, and three infants on the hands of the Society, was reported upon, and it was stated L 5 had been received from the husband, It was resolved to stop the allowance that had been granted by the Society of LI per week. The case of M'Cann, who had.been in the Hospital in Wellington, and who came up to Masterton but was too ill to work waß.reported upon. -Dr Hosking stated his illness , was of a chronic nature,' and not admittable to the Hospital- in Masterton. The action of. the Secretary in'advancing the money to pay his fare to Wellington was endorsed. There were no new cases brought forward, The Chairman drew attention to the circular re Charitable Institutions Act, and said it would die a natural death so far as they were concerned, as, though they could get 100 subscribers at 5s each per annum, the Bill required they should have a guaranteed income of LIOO per annum. The present, list contained the names of 45 subscribers, amounting to L 33105, This concluded the business.
