We have been requested to draw our readers' attention to Mr F. H. Wood's advertisement which appears in to-day's columns, of a large and varied stock of summer clothing, dress stuff and drapery that will be sold at his Masterton rooms on Saturday next. This salo is a continuation of the one held last Saturday, on account of the Auckland Clothing Company. The sale will bo entirely without reserve, a proof of which feature was obtained at last Saturday's sale. Messrs Lowes and lorns stock sale was well attended yesterday, the yards being well filled, upwards of 800 head of cattle being yarded, embracing all classes, the bnlk of which sold at rates that wero considerably below those of previous sales. Bullocks brought from £5 to £o 2s; young steers, 50s to 60s; yearlings 30s; fltore cows from 42s 6d ; dairy cows £4 to £5; hack horses, £4 to £9; draught horses, £l2 to £2O; piga— for small stores 8s to 15s, and 30s for large pigs. Having been asked how it is that our name, which usually figures so conspiciously in prize lists of agricultural machinery, is not oven mentioned in the list of awards just published as having been made at the Wellington Exhibition, we would intimate for the benefit of the curious that, although our exhibits occupied the largest space in the Exhibition, and were most favorably commented upon by His Excellency Sir William Jervois, they were all marked and entered "not for competition," hence our name does not appear in the prize list.—We are, etc., Reid & Gray.
The Phoenix Lodge, 1.0. G.T. held a tea and open meeting at the Temperance Hall last night. Bro. Collier, P. W. C. T., occupied the chair at the meeting, and the choir, under tho able leadership of Mr Pearson, the platform. Bro. E. Duncan presided at the harmonium. One of the leadinp features of the evening was the presence and address of Bro. D, C, Cameron, Grand Lodge Secretary, who :made an interesting though brief*speech on the progress of tho work in the colonies and its present state, Addresses were given by the Chairman and Bros. Evernden, Easthope, Bamber, Holdaway, and Dixon. Recitations and songs were given by Bros Magin and Squires and others, and several suitable songs from Silver Bells and like works wore rendered by the choir at intervals, and much appreciated by the audience. A vote of thanks and the National Anthem concluded a most enjoyable evening, ; Messrs McCardle and Hogg waited upon the Hon Mr Ballance yesterday on behalf of the Masterton-Mangahao Special Settlement Association, and pointed out ■that, according to the map supplied tho boundary of the Settlement included hilly country, and m consequence there would not be enough level land to cut up for the requirements of all the members. Mr Ballance suggested that their Surveyor should report accurately upon the quantity of suitable land, and if it was found necessary, and they wanted it done, the: reserves could be reduced to enable each member to get his quantity of land. Mr : Hogg also saw tho HonMr Richardson, who promised a reduction in fares to 5s for adults accompanying the children by the special excursion train to the Exhibition. Mr Richardson also stated that when the season was further advanced, excursion trains from Wellington - to Masterton would run periodically. Through the energy displayed by Mr R, Bruce Wallace, the energetic manager of tho firm of Messrs J. H. Wallace and Co,, the regular stock sales which are being established in Wellington and its vicinity are prbvingliiost successful, and their regular auctions of horses, which are to be held at the New Zealander yards, look as if they were about to supply a long felt want.. At any rate, in our yesterday's issue 'they announced -the - preliminaries of their sale for Saturday next, and to-day they publish Born© important entries. Among these are the draught stallion Dainty Davie, well and favorably known in this-district, the coaching stallion Rapid Roan, draught stock on account of a Canterbury breeder, and a number of hacks, harness horses, etc., as well as a buggy .with horse and .harness complete. With well directed enterprise Messrs J. H, Wallace and Co have every reason to look forward to the establishment of important and extensive market sales, .
In the Exhibition-there is one special exhibit, which is greatly admired, namely, the wool mats and portmanteaus made by Mv Field, of Dunedin. The whole of the exhibit has been, purchased by MrThorburn, the clothier,' of Willis-street.
