THE SALMON OVA FOR NEW ZEALAND.
Writing to the Scotsman Mr John Anderson, Denham Green, says: Sir,—Allow me . to answer numerous letters from gentlemen who have seen my name connected with Mr Farrandthe 100,000 ova lauded alive at Wellington; New Zealand.
Ist. 111 answer wliv every shipment of ova was a failure for the last twelve yeais, when they were first tried from London, it appears the parties who abstracted the ova from the salmon could not get it quick enough among tho mos3 and ice, and lair upon lair in the box made to contain it. 2d. It is a well-known fact that' ova while in this state is very tender, and the least shake or oscillation of the railwaycould not but destroy a quantity ere itreached London; and with the weight of the soft moss or fog, and the ice getting looser as it went-on its journey, every day added to its further destruction; and, as I often Baid, it is a wonder if one ever reached New Zealand alive.
3d. In order to avoid this, Mr Farr, after obtaining the ova at my. advice, had it conveyed to my son's hatchery at Linlithgow, to be kept there until eyed; then the egg got more into a solidity, and could stand more fatigue on its journey; and to prevent the danger on the railway, we got a peculiar shape of bottle made, having a wide mouth, and through the bung we inserted a tube to convey air all through' their journey, without having to change the water, These bottles were carefully hung with indiarubber rings, and the boxes supported on very fine chair steel springs, on a plan never invented or seen triedbefore. As was proved for the 400 mile journey, scarcely fifty suffered from the shaking,
4th, In the 'refrigerating chamber he had his shallow case of drawers placed, on which only one layer of ova was laid, and over them flowed a gentle stream of iced water from a large reservoir; aud this is all the secret of Mr Farr's great success.
