CARTERTON TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present Commissioners R. Fairbrother (Chairman), A. Campbell, H. Callister, and W. P, Allen.

The minutes cf tho last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer reported a credit balance at tho Bank of N.Z. to be £6O 9s Sd.

Correspondence was read from the Property' Tax Department re the assessment of Gqvernnient and Town Board properties, stating that they came under the Property Assessment Act. The following offers of land for gravel pit were then opened Joseph Aplin, ono'acre in Brooklyn road, £4O; A. Hughan, half acre on the Taratahi, £2O; E. L. Wakelin, lease of piece of land at yearly rental of £5. .. After disoussion, the whole of the teh' ders were rejected, The Chairman regretted, as did also Mr H. Callister, that the Board had not seen fit to avail themselves of the offer of five acres from Mr G, A. Fairbrother, as they would now have been in a good position as regards good wearable metal, and would not have been shut out of the pit during wet weather, as is the case with the pits which the Board now possesses.

The Chairman drew the attention of the Board to a letter which had appeared $ the " Wairarapa Standard" since fheir iast meeting, criticising the Board on the way in which the public money was spent. He (the Chairman) spoke very strongly on the matter, and said that the letter was both unjqst and untrue in its remarks. He moved, that in future the balance sheet of eaoli year be published in the local paper, setting forth the receipts and expenditure, and to whom and for what purpose all monies are paid. Mr H. Callister seconded—Carried.

The following accounts were passed for payment Joseph Aplin, £2O 3s 6d; G. Burnett, £2 Is 6d: C. G, Beckett, £6 ss; Assessment tax, £lO.
