' A few daya.ago information was received- ■ by the Melbourne police that a man, pre* • sumed to be of unsound mind, was conducting himself in a most outrageous and - disgustingmanner in a hotel/in. Spencer tags street. The constable who. weht' to- the * .house to institute inquiries was, injcfrnied ' that the mari:complained of had picked up from the floor a live kitten, which, in the presence of s evoral persons, lie had then and there killed and eaten, .out of mere • bravado or wanton sport. Hiscondiict excited such horror and disgust that some of these who witnessed the brutal actj >,;■-, - straightway left the house. When the I jl perpetrator of this horrible deed was fiw pointed out he was recognised as a man -3J.for whom a warrant had been issued over twelve months, ago, for assaulting a perfect atranger to him, whose leg he had broken. The warrant was executed on ' the 27th ult., by Plain-clothed Constable D. G, O'Dqutiell, who arrested the alleged offender in the Sailors'flome ; Tvhere he had taken up his quarters, He gave his name to the police as Patrick Dwyer, and was identified as . the late surgeon of the steamship Garonne who left that vessel suddenly and niy> accountably about fourteen months ago. He was said to be well educated, having passed through the Dublin ' University -■ • with honors. When apprehended he was ■ olad in rough sailors' garb, but he did not attempt to,deny tligthewas the individyaL. j wanted for % assault, for \rhioh ofjenctjfm ■ lie expressed himself as very sorry, sta'tV * ' < jug that lie was drinking heavily at the time lie committed it. Dwyer was brought ■ up before a full Blench at the City Court, and after evidence had been taken he was committed for trial 011 a charge of assault .with intent to do serious bodily harm,-*-'Age.'
