A performance for the benefit of the funds of the Masterton Institute will be given by Professor Rice at the Theatre Royal on Tuesday night. It may be interesting to mention, says the N.Z. Times, that the present population of the four chief cities of New Zealand is respectively estimated by tho Registrar-General as follows Auckland, 28,580: Dunedin,
24,999 ; Wellington, 23,092; Christchurch, 16,432. ■ To the latter ought really to be added that of Sydenham, which is a part of tho city, and has a population ot 9741, which would then give Chrißtchurc 26,203 inhabitants.

A meeting of the Masterton Park Trust was held at the Institute yesterday afternoon, Present Messrs Payton (Chairman), McGregor, Feist, and Boddington. The minutes of • the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer reported a debit balance of £l2 Bs. A letter was read from Mr W. G. Ueard, asking the Trust to lease the Park Oval to the two Masterton Cricket Clubs for a term of seven years, the clubs to keep the ground in order, and to maintain the fence. After discussion, the Trust decided that it would grant the application, reserving power to terminate the lease by giving six months notice. It was not anticipated that it would be necessary to exercise this power, but it was considered that the Trußt should rutain it in the event of the interests of the public requiring protection. The nominal sum of two guineas per annum was fixed as a rental, It was also stipulated that the concessions made by the Trust to the Caledonian anc) Friendly Societies for their annual gatherings, should be respected by the Cricket Clubs,
