The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1885. THE WELLINGTON HOSPITAL SCANDAL.

The Commissioners appointed by the' Government to inquire into the management of the Wellington Hospital have brought up their report, which we publish in another column. The report is, in many respects, quite worthless, because Dr Chilton, out ot whose dismissal the charges arose, did not give evidence, and called no witnesses in his defence, because lie has entered an action for damages agaiust the Government. The report is, therefore, simply an ex parte one. There are, of course, points in it with which everybody nmßt agree, but these have been self-evident from .the beginning. The way the nurses were dismissed and ordered to leave at night time has been condemned throughout the length and breadth of the land, and the" consideration" of the Commissioners is therefore simply an echo of publio sentiment, The question of extravagance was one which any grocer or house-wife could have, settled by a simple calculation, and the report on that subject is therefore of very little value, At the end of the third paragraph they • become simply maudlin when they say "We are glad to notice that iu spite of great difficulties arising from the circumstances lmio alluded to, the nursing department has been efficiently conducted." Where, in the name' of common sense, is the complete disorganization that is spoken of? If the nursing staff was disorganized, it stands to reason that the patients would have suffered to a considerable extent, - The' best thing to do wit)i the report would be to put it in the waste paper basket.
