MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held yesterday evening. Present—Messrs BoddingtOn (Chairman), Payton,-Bogg, Girdwood, Woodroofe, and Reese. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting and of a special meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £sl9s 9d, The Secretary read the correspondence inward and outward. The Secretary of the Education Board wrote, stating thai a cupboard for the Bide school was being forwarded,* - The Secretary to the Board wrote acknowledging the receipt of a letter stating that the Committee had appointed Mr Reynell assistant master, and that he had been instructed to.reply that the Committee had no power to make appointments. ... . ■ Mr Hogg thought that the Secretary to the Board had exceeded his duty in writing, Buch a letter.. The Chairman said he was under, the, impression that the letter was written under instructions from the Chairman. At_ any . rate, the letter stated that'the writer had been instructed to reply as he did. ~. A desultory .discussion then followed as to the reading of the Education Act; ; _ Mr Payton pointed out that a discussion of the kind was useless, and .theproper course would be to have a legal opinion. Mr Hogg thought that was not neces-' sary, as the Board had already, conceded them the right to appoint. The Chairman denied that, and held that the Board; being the, paymaster, had the right to appoint, and: had not relinquished it. . "It was agreed to allow the point to lie in abeyance, ..■ . . , . , Upon the correspondence regarding the railway fares of children, parents, and teachersvisiting the Exhibition, beingread the Chairman suggested that teachers should be allowed to t;o free, as there were very few, and parents at 3s. Mr Bunny wrote, suggesting that the excursions be allowed to stand over till after the next meeting of the Board. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hogg, seconded by Mr Payton, that the Government be recommended that the fares for adults accompanying the children shall not exceed 2s fid. Mr Payton moved that in the event of excursions taking place parents or relatives be warned that they would have to take care of their children while in Wellington, The Head Master reported that the average attendance for the month was 388, The Misto of the Bide school reported an average attendance of 70, and asked that water might be supplied for the children. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Payton" that .tho Wesleyan trustees be asked to bear half the. cost of providing an Abyssinian pump. Carried. Accounts amounting to £ls 5s 3d were passed for payment subject to their being certified to, it being understood that the Board be requested to pay for fixing the stove in the side school, and for sundry other works. Mr Girdwood was appointed visiting member for the nest month, The meeting then adjourned.
