Melbourne, Septeiiiber i 5. Advices have been received here from Wilson's Promontory Btating that, at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Captain Thompson, of the Greenock steamship Gulf of Carpentaria (1696 tons), arrived with the boats belonging to that vessel. He reports that the Gulf of Carpentaria was bound from Newcastle to London, via Adelaide, and while off Cleft Island she struck on a rock not mai'ked on the chart... Tho. vessel became a total wreck, and sank in thirty fathoms of water within three hours of her striking. The crew took to the boats, and effected a landing at Wilson's Promontory. The disaster was fortunately unattended by loss of life. Constantinople, September 15.

Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, Envoy Extraordinary to the Porte, has had four meetiugs with the officials appointed by the Sultan to confer with him on the Egyptian question, but so far no definite result has been attained,
