We are pleased to learn that the Minister of Public Works has seen the necessity for making reductions in the freight on wool and other goods on the Welljngtpp and Masterton railway. The charge cii wool iias been §s 3d per. bale, and this is now reduced to Ss Id, being a reduction of Is 2d. We feel assured that the alteration will prove profitable to the Department, while it will add considerably to the traffic in the distviiu,. These gatherings have always been very sociable, and thoße who attend should therefore . have every prospect of spending a very pleasant evening, -Music will be supplied by the Masterton String Band. Miss Payne, who during her residence near Masterton has added not a little to the success ot amateur musical entertainments, is, we learn, about to take up her residence in Carterton, where she in' tends to receive pupils. Miss-Payne's many friends in Masterton will wish her success in her undertaking. Mr P. H, Wood's fortnightly stock sale at Ray's yards, Taratahi, takes place tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. A large quantity of stock, including upwards of 300 sheep, cows, mixed cattle, and horses have been entered, and the sale thorefore presents attractions to buyers as well as sellers.

The New Zealand Comedy and Burlesque Company made their first appearance at the Town Hall, Greytown, last evening, The entertainment throughout was an artistic success pf a high order, and the public there are unanimous in its favor, In compliance with a numerous requisition the company perform there again this evening, when it is expected there will be a large attendance. The programme consisted of the comedy " Withered Leaves," " Drawing room echoes," and the farce "Sarah's young man." Thecompanyappearsatthe Theatre Royal to ; morro\v evening. . A first offender charged with drunkenness was dealt with in the usual manner in the Resident Magistrates' Court this morning. 1

It is understood that the estate of G. Bowleß,of Carterton, who recently filed a declaration of bankruptcy, has furnished matter for three jury casesin the Supreme Court, and that the proceedings are already well under way. The adjourned meeting of creditors in the estate of Mrs Hayward, of Feathers' ton, was to have been held in the old Court-huuse, Mastertpn, to-day, but at the appointed time only Mr A. R. Bunny, representing the Deputy Assignee, and a representative of the Press were present, and the proceedings therefore lapsed. From the statement filed it appears that the assets are LIB, and liabilities Ll2l 16s lid,
