Intelligence is to hand, stating that on the 21st August several Spanish vessels arrived at Uap, one of the Caroline group of islands, and made preparations to occupy the place. A German gunboat, however, made her appearance on the 24t& August, and at once proceeded to land a body of troops, by whom the German flag was hoisted and the island proclaimed German territory, the Spaniards formally
protesting against the same, On' receipt of the intelligence at Madrid the greatest excitement ensued, and a mob proceeded to the German embassy, ■ where they forcibly palled down the German flag and removed the arms of that country. A meeting was subsequently held, under the presidency of Senor Sagasta, when it was resolved that if the Liberal party were recalled to power they would pledge themsolves to break off relations with Germany and re-conquer the Inland of Uap. September G. Advices from Spain state that the cholera is decreasing in violence, and that the number of deaths is rapidly diminishing.
A case of cholera has been reported to the medical authorities at Cardiff, South Wales, the patient being a sailor on board a ship which recently arrived from Barcelona.
The total quantity of wheat afloat for tlie United Kingdom is 1,580,000 quarters, or 80,000 quarters less than last week.
Prime New Zealand frozen mutton averages id higher, and .is now quoted at sd. Tallow is 6d higher. Best Australian beef averaging 27s 6d, 'and mutton 29s 6d.
At to-day's wool sales 11,800 bales were offered to a dull market.
