Mr Yaile has written a letter to the Auckland Herald stating that the Hon Mr Richardson's claim to have increased tlie railway receipts 10s per cent is founded on taking the expenditure on open lines only, not as in former years was done, on lines opened and unopened. What this means may be gathered on reference to the Public Work Statement. It appears that on the 31st of March last there were in course of construction 155 miles of railway, which, taking the average rate of lines opened, would cost the colony, when completedijapwards 0f£2,100,000. The Statement itself proves that all these lines are nearly completed, and that the greater part of the sum named is therefore likely to have been expended. Until the tables mentioned in the statement are to haDd, the exact amount cannot, howevor, be ascertained. If this is correct, the extra profit of which'tlie Minister of Public Works is boasting, has dwindled away into nothing, and Mr Yaile deserves credit for having exposed a piece of very gross deception,.
