The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4,1886. THE WOOL MARKET.

The cable news which we published yesterday, announcing the opening of the fourth series of the wool sales at London, is not very re-assuring, yet it is not so bad as a section of the Wellington press represents it to be. Though crossbreds are weak, no actual fall in prices is reported. In Australian merinoes there has been a fall of a penny a pound. As the Australian differs considerably from the New Zealand merino, there is nothing to warrant the assumption that New Zealand wools have been materially afFeptec), Qf more significance is the annoupcement that there was but a small attendance of foreign buyers, because it tonds to show that manufacturers have still a considerable quantity on hand from the last sales, There ore, however, many sales on record which opened with no better promise, and during which either the opening prices were maintained, or there was'fl considerable advance upon them. A fall in prices at tjje September sales would not affect the colonies to any' serious extent, so long as they recovered before the March sales. This very often happens, and we think the reason for it is plain enough, The bulk of the colonial wool is put upon the market during the earlier sales, and the arrivals ;it Home after May or June almost invariably consist of odd lots, taken from stragglers or from skins, and locks or pieces which have been scoured, • The inferior quality which comes to hand for the late, sales almost invariably causes a fall which does not extend to those at which the bulk and pick of tljp Golonial clip is offered.
