BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the North Wairarapa Benevolent- Society was held at 4 p.m. yesterday. Present—Mr M. Caselberg (in the chair), Miss Beard, Mrs Amot, Rev. W. E, Paige, Rev. J. N. Buttle, Mr E. Feist, Mr T, 0. D'Arcy (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary stated that there was a credit balance at the Bank of £131.18s fld. ■ :: j

Apologies were received from Mrs Hacker and the Rev. D.. Fulton for inability to attend. The Chairman stated, that he had brought the matter of providing labor up ■at the-Borough Council,' and applicant would get employment at stonebreaking at current rates. .

The Secretary stated that he had granted one order the previous day, but .the man came shortly after and said he expected to get more profitable work almost immediately.

The following accounts were passed for

payments—Duncan & Sons, £3; W; ! Prangnell, 10s j , J. &" 0, Herbert, 30»; W, Hansen, £3; 'F, W, Temple, £2; Walter Jones, £l7s ljd; G, Wyeth, £1 10s j Weatin, 10s; total, £l2 7s ljtd. The Secretary made a statement on the case of the distressed family at Kurupuni, which has been mentioned of late. He said the man was at first disinclined to accept assistance, and thought he would pull through without it. They had, however, accepted what was given. The Rev. W. E. Paige said lie did not think the family would be on the books any longerthan they could help, but the man could not raise money for some time to come,

Replying to Mr Feist, the Secretary stated that he understood that the sum of £ll, specially collected, had been expended in clothing. He had been asked to draw out the subscription list, and had done so without prejudice to the Society. in the case of a man who recently left his family in Masterton, the Rev. Mr Paigo moved that rent be paid.for another week, and that steps be taken to bring the man back.

Seconded by Mr Feist and carried.

The Secretary reported that a woman and three or four children previously referred to, had been found destitute, having only a few potatoes and some pollard that had been given them. Hi had given relief to the extent of 7s 6. He did not know where the husband was, .flft hari.matlo cvn -applioatioiii-for ctone.. breaking, but had never turned up.' Tlu woman was not able to earn money. It was resolved to grant relief at the rate of 10s per week. . , The cases alreaoy on the books were gone through/and the meeting adjourned.
