The annual meeting of the Masterton Farmers' Club will be held at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon.
The sheep of Wi Mahupuku, about 5000 in number, and thirty' horses, have been seized by the bailiff. Captain and Mrs Bates, of the Sal vation Army, arrive in Masterton to-night, The captain is to take command of the local "garrison." •

Some of the business people in Masterton are of opinion that , property is hot sufficiently protected, and are taking steps to appoint a watchman.
Captain Edwin telegraphed at noon ; "Bad weather expected between West and South and South-East. Glass further rise, and weather very cold," As the bad weater commenced about five hours previously, tho "prediction" will, we presume, be accepted as correct, Tho Masterton Rifles got a somewhat mnexpected reverse in the triangular match fired at Wellington yesterday, as they stand at the bottom of the list. Tho City Rifles scored 745, the D Battery 727, and the Masterton Rifles 683. The highest individual score was made by Vol. Bright, of the Masterton team, who put 85 to his' credit.
Mossrs Lowes and lorns hold a large and unreserved sale for the Auckland Clothing Co. at their rooms to-morrow, and in consequence of the company withdrawing their business from the Wellington District, all goods will be sold at any sacrifice, and families can get a good_ supply of drapery, clothing, etc., at their own prices. The goods are now on view.
The Hope of Cartorton Tent, 1.0. R., celebrated their anniversary last night by having a tea, social gathering, and a soiree in the Carterton Assembly Rooms. Our correspondent writes that he is sorry to say that it proved almost a failure, especially to the caterer, Mr A. L. Whyte, who had beon led to believe that there would be upwards of 300 people at the entertainment, for which he accordingly made provisions for. The number present was little over 50.
. An unreserved sale will be held by Mr F. H. Wood at his Masterton rooms, tomorrow. The goods to be submitted are the property of a gentleman who is leaving the district, and consist of new and second hand furniture, glassware, .crockery, etc. In addition Mr Wood will also offer oats, potatoes, sewing machines, fruit, etc. The sale begins at 2 p.m.
A Christchurch telegram illijstrates the degree of frenzy which has been reached over the East and West Coast railway. It is now proposed by the League to extend membership to the public, and to distribute medals to all who pay an entrance foe of halfra-orown. We suggest that, to preyent mistakes, they be made of leather. ■
Another comet is said to be visible. Writing to the Sydney Morning Herald on August 12th, Mr H. 0. Russell, Government. Astronomer of New South Wales, .saysMr Ellory sends another telegram from Kiel as follows: ' Madras comet was observed at Nice, August 9 - 012 (i.e., 2h, 41m. a,in,, August 10), its R. A. is7h. 23m. 43a, ; declination, 28' 1' north.' No other particulars are given, so it is impossible to say where it is now until it is observed again. Considerable amusement was caused at the opening of the entertainment at St. Matthew's School Room last eyening by the Rev W. E, Paige announcing that after the last concert, several shillings had been picked up in a corner of the room, find that, if the owner y/ould call on Mr Sellav, the Seyetary of the Vestry, the amount would be refunded, Mean: time, however, it has been invested in impioving the Church grounds. The calculation was, no doubt, a good one, for so far the claimant has not announced himself, By reference to an advertisement in lour columns, visitors to Wellington will aearn that they can have superior accommodation at Railway House, Thomson Quay, within one minutes walko jhe Railway terminus.
