The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 1885. THE PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.

THE Public Works Statement which was delivered by the Hon, E. Richa' Dso.y on Tuesday night was unusually long, and a great variety of subjects wete touched upon, There being no new policy to unfold, it was naturally not so interesting as it might, have been under other circumstances. Even the announcement that theGoveinuieiit proposed a salve for the wounded feelings of Canterbury, Nelson, and Westhind members by expending .£150,000 in commencing the two mil way lines which have become bo notorious, and which ars to connect the three provincial districts, failed to stai'ile the House, because it ' was pretty well known that the Government had a decided wish to .waste money in that direction, Ah this small sum necessarily involves further expenditure to the amount of about three millions, Parliament will probably pause before passing the item. If a company cannot be induced to look at it, even with a million and a half acres of land thrown in, then the project must, be a bad one indeed. With regard to the railway through the Forty Mih; Bush, it is nop at present contemplated to carry the linefiii thw northward from Masterton than Mauriceville, but it is to be constructed from Woodville to fahiatua, It is to be presumed that the romaiuder of the line is to be provided for out of the next loan, It is satisfactory to know that the Government intends to proceed with the opening of Crown Lands,' ■on which about £150,000 is to be expended. This is certainly not a very large sum, ( Lut it is a considerable advance 011 last yai, The proposal to borrow another million of money seems to have coma gs glibly from the tongue of the Minister, as if he felt he was actually taking w burden off the shoulders of members by mentioning only so small a sum, As yet, the tables mentioned in the Statement have j)Qt' been published, and it is therefore impossible to say what roid works are to be' undertaken in the Wairprapa, and how this important portion of the public works of the colony will fare in this district. The Statement has evidently created a feeling of dissatisl&cflon in the House, otherwise Major Atkinson is not likely to have given notice of the no-confi-dence reaoliitiqna. These will he moved to-night, when the public works policy of the Government will, no doubt, be fully gone into.
