Owing- to the depression in trade, thousands of colliers in Wales are idle. A fearful wave of heat extended over the United Kingdom from July 24 to 28. In London the effect of the long spell of hot weather was apalling, and everyone was more or less affected, Children died by hundreds, and scores of men were prostrated. by sunstroke each day, and the roads were often blocked by horses falling dead. Now terror was added by the occurence of hydrophobia; indeed the streets were absolutely unsafe, owing to the number of mad dogs. A despatch states that the King of Dahomey with a large army has massacred the French in unprotected villages. The King has also captured, according to the same despatch, 1000 French persons, and he and his followers propose to eat them, Tho Steamer' 'Hech' collided with the London and Liverpool steamer 'Cheerful' in a fog, and the latter foundered. Thirteen persona were drowned,
A sensation was caused in London fashionable circles by the report of a fistic encounter between Lord Lonsdale and Sir George., Chetwyn. The fight took place in- a well known resort in Rotten Row, and lasted ten minutes. The affair arose through jealousy over Mrs Langtr,y the actress. A London Special says that the scandal involving Sir Charles Dilkc is settled so far as the Courts are concerned, and the English Press states that the settlement was completed by the casting of Sir Charles in acheque for £26,000 in favor of Mr Donald Crawford, the aggrieved husband.
Mr Gladstone writes, expressing a confident belief that the newly enfranchised electors will declare in favor of the Liberals, and he looks forward with assured confidence, to the result of tho general election.
