The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 1885. THE MANGATAINOKE BLOCK.

It is to be regretted that a warning with reference to the Mangutainoke Block, which has been issued by the Lands Department, and the necessity for which had arisflii in Wellington, should have been made the means of casting aspersions on residents in Masterton. The notice referred to sets forth that "it having come to the knowledge of the Government that certain persons are receiving money on account of a special settlement proposed to be formed in the Mangatainoke Block, to be called the ' General Gordon Special Settlement,' (he public are hereby cautioned against paying any money to any person representing himself to be the Agent, Promoter, or Solicitor of the said General Gordon Special Settlement, or any other special settlement, proposed to be formed in the Mangataihoke Block aforesaid, as no piomises or implied promises have been made to any person by the Government in respect of special settlements in that Block," The Department undoubtedly received intormation regarding the promoters of the General Gordon Speoial Settlement, wbioh warranted the publication of the notice, which, however, contains nothing to prevent intending settlers from subscribing their names to any proposed association, It is a well known fact that an Association is being formed in Masterton, and that a considerable number of desiring members have already given in their names. It is, however, thoroughly understood that the Minister of Lands has given no distinct ) romise; nor has any subscriber been asked to pay even a single penny. All that is being done is to got everything ready, so that when the Block has been thrown open, an application may be sent in without any delay. Such a proceeding is straightforward and business-like, and is not referred to in the notice from tho Department, which simply warns people agaiust paying money.
