WAIRARAPA POULTRY, PIGEON, AND CANARY SOCIETY.
|resident, Hugh H. Beetham; VicePresident, Thos. Parsons; Committee. R. Bright, T. Dixon, A. Elkiris, T. James, W, G. King, J. D. Oakly, D. ■ S. Papworth; 'Hun Treasurer, J, j ■ Payton; Hon Secretary, \V. McKenzie; Judges, Poultry, A. Saunders;Pigeons Burton Boys '; Canaries,'l), D. Hyde. The opening bliow under' the auspices of the Wairarapa Poultry, . Pigeon and Canary Society was held at the Theatre Royal yesterday, and proved an entire success, no matter from what point it" is viewed. If there was a drawback it was to he found in the fact that, the 'entries that had been made turned up with -very few, exceptions, and that ; on account of this the Committee was unable to have all the cages placed in time for the.judges to begin their work at the hour named." This was simply unavoidable, especially as it is impossible to know the .-exact' space which each section will occupy. The poultry was placed on tables running: from the main entrance to the stage, and all round three, sides of the building, all the available space being thus' taken up. The pigeons occupied a double row in front of the stage, and the'canaries were placed on the stage itself. During the day there was reason to cpniplain that the light .was very bad, and it. was feared that this drawback, would be felt in a. greater degree in the evening. It was however, found that every exhibit could be seen to thebestadvantage in the evening. Tlie Committee ' worked hard, and did its utmost to make the show a success. A catalogue that was correct in every detail had been isEued, and by means of this every exhibit could be. found without difficulty. The careful staging, as a matter of course, offered an additional facility. The attendance during the afternoon was very fair, and, during the greater part of the ovening there were quite as many people in the building as it could conveniently hold. Among the visitors were numbers of ladies and gentlemen from all parts of the district. Pearsonß Bandkindly playod a number of airs during the evening and took up a stand in the gallery. The music contributed not a little to the pleasures of the evening. The following notes regarding some of the exhibits in Poultry might prove useful;- . DORKINGS. Dorkins wero not well represented. In adult Silver Greys thore was but on entry, and the only prize went to M" Elkins, as did the first prize for young birds in the same class. In "any other variety" Mr T. J. James had no compe - tition, but took a first prize with a pair of good colored Dorking, HAMBCRGHS, In Golden Spangled Hamburglis, M Elkins took first with the only cock that had a good comb and a clear deaf ear, Mr King took second prize with a better hen, and with a better tailed cock, though he had a much worse head. The rest were all badly stained on the deaf ear, The Golden Spangled Hamburglis were a large and good class, and Mr Elkins, who took first in Wellington last week, got beaten with birds bred by himself, MrM. Wilton taking first and Mr Hutton second, against competition that took the judge a long time to find the winner. In Silver Spangled Mr Wilton took both first and second, but all the birds were deficient in tail, and many of the combs were decidedly bad. In Silver Pencilled, Mr Elkins took all before him with some really pretty birus. A very inferior pen of Black Hamburglis, in which the cock was evidently out of health, received no notice from the jud?e. BLACK SPANISH, The show of Black Spanish was a very poor one, the combs being very defective, . ANDALUSIANS. These were better than they were in Wellington, especially on the 'deaf ear. Mr McKenzie took first and Mr Warner second, Houdans. In old Houdans Mr Ivor James took first and only prize. A very fine hen was shown by Mr Oakly, but it was mated 'with a cock too entirely out of condition to be noticed by any judge. • The young Houdans were not first class, but useful birds. Mr Dixon took first and Mr Jones second. Lakgshans. The Langßhans were mostly deficient ill breast. Messrs Harrison and Perry took three prizes, and Mr Elkins one. Game. In game Mr Elkins carried all before him, leaving only two second prizes for ■Mr James and Mr Jones, and taking five firsts himself. Tlio game classes were not well represented. Mr Elkins' superiority was evidently too well known to encourage competition. Cochins'. In Buff Cochinß Mr King had to be content with second prize, but with a pair of grand young birds that will come to the front another year, being grandly feathered, without any vulture hock. Mr Elkins took first and highly commended with really grand birdß, that were, however, too stiff in back feathers. Brahmas. In these Mr King stood first, with Mr James, second, and both with good birds, But the pride of the bliow were the light Brahmas, where both young and old were well represented by a number of entries of great merit. Mr Rogan took first in the adult class, and Mr Payton second. For the young birds Mr F. G. Moore waß first and Mr Oakly second. L. J. Hooper* highly commended. All those birds were from Mr Payton's stock. LEGHORNS. Thei Leghorns were not Al. The legs were inclined to be too white, and the deaf ears were too yellow. In the whites Mr Fear took first, and Mr Seed second. In the browns, only one prize was awarded, and that to Mr McKenzie. POLANDS; In Golden Spangled Poland Mr Hooper took first and Mr Elkins second. In any other variety Mr Jones took first with a pair of grand white-crested blacks, whose crests were sadly mutilated ! by rubbing against the top of a low cage, ! PLYMOUTH ROCKS. In adults Mr W. McKenzie took first and second, the first prize winners being especially fine birds. In under 12 months, Mr Elkins took first, and Mr McKenzie second. The latter pair were too young to compete with their older opponents, BANTAMS, These were a poor class, all too large, and most of the game bantams were more or less white about the face. UNSPEOIFIED. Mr McKenzie took a prize with a pair of Black Minorcas, a very handsome useful breed, that is getting almost lost. DUCKS. With Aylesbury Duoks Mr King carried : all before him, as he did in Wellington. The only two pens of Rouen Ducks shown werp small, and one of the drakes was mutilated iu the wing. , In the barndoor and selling • classes there was nothing calling for any particular notice, or very good of its kind, The judges' task was rendered far more
ing old young birds in one class/and cooks and-hens in ohe pen. It is a matte of estimation rather than of judging as to whether a young bird will ultimately furnish to be as good as an old one, A'nd in the :great majority of - cases the best cockandthe best .hen are not found in the same pen, so that the public eye is not properly educated when they'd" not kn&w whether.it was the cook or the hen that secured. any particular prize. • V The following is the prize list POULTRV.
