The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1885. THE SITUATION.
If THE no-cohfidence motion has been postponed,; the members opposed to the Government are apparently determined to harass them. • Although it has been denied that Sir Julius Vogel is prepared to .retire in order to save his colleagues, Dame Rumor persists that it is nevertheless contemplated by himself and the Ministry that lie shall not long remain a confidential adviser of Her Majesty's representative. But he is not to go empty-handed. His grateful colleagues, it is said, intend that ho shall be appointed AgentGonural, and that he shall receive such a salary as will prove commensurate with liis own ideas of the office} Such a retirement savors little of the sacrifice,' and would, of course, be very accepts ble. There is, however, nothing definite known on the subject, and'Mr MacArthur has therefore given notice that he , will ask for information today. The question cannot be ut palatable one to Ministers, tor if the truth of the rumor is admitted, the admission must prove damaging to them, as must also any attempt at evasion. An unqualified denial is the only thing that would allow them tocome out unscathed, and this,' it is .believed, they are unable to'gi ve.. - In addition to this, Sir George Grey in tends' to ask a very pertinent question, namely, whether the Government intends to proceed with the construction of the East and West Coast (Middle Island) railway. Canterbury and West Coast members are, of course, anxious to see the work proceeded with at the expense of the colony, now that English capitalists have declined to be caught even by the sacrifice of a large slice of the public estate, and it is inoie than likely that the support of many depends entirely on what the Government is prepared to do. The question is welltimed, as the House and country should be fully aware of the views of the Government on the subject.
