The German Press, referring to the reported action of Germany in annexing the Caroline Islands, repudiates as entirely obsolete the Spanish claims to a protec torate over that territory. Cairo, August 16. It is currently reported that Khalifa Abdoolah, who assumed the succession to theMahdi, has beenkilled in a riotamongst the Arabs at Khartoum. Sydney, August 17. A grand review of the Colonial forces was held on Saturday, when over 4000 troops were under arms. It is announced that Colonel-Richard-son has been promoted to the rank, of Major-General for his services in' the Soudan. _ In consequence of large number of liberated convicts who have been arriving in this Colony lately from New Caledonia, the Premier, Sir Alexander Stuart, has addressed a remonstrance to the Imperial Government on the subject. London, August 15. The New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Aorangi, from Lyttleton (Julyß,) arrived at Plymouth this morning, with hor frozen meat cargo in good condition. Melbourne, August 17. The work of drafting the Bill accepting the provisions of the Federation Enabling Act is in a forward state, and the measure will shortly bo placed before Parliament, Mr D. O'Brien's horse Tasman has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup.
