AN ABSCONDING SOLICITOR.
The Auckland "Star's" Oamaru corren dent telegraphs For several days rumours have boon current that Mr Balmer, Borough Solicitor, had disappeared ; also, that a large amount of Trust funds had not boon accounted for, Various statements as to theamount of the deficiency have been current, but nothing definite is yet known! Probably it will be found, to be £IO,OOO. The matter assumed definite form on Friday, when the Borough Council passed a, resolution expressing belief that the defaulter had left the Colony. They elected 4' succesiq'y. a fortnjghij ago. A question was rsis'e'4 in the Council js to ||ie noh-oomplefcioß of the transfer of oertain lands taken by the Borough for a water race, and it' was found that £560 was handed to Balmer two years previously, to paycompensation for these lands.. The.Counoil decided to call on the solicitor for an explanation! when Balmer disappeared.; Balmer, it is supposed, sailed by the last San Fr&p; cisco steamer from Auckland ' ; '
