The defendant in the case deliberately went into an hotel, purchased the liquor, and then supplied it to a prohibited person when he thought he was not watched. For this act he had to disburse £1 and costs—a practical way of proving to him that the law is not a dead letter. The aale in the estate of G. Bowles' butcher, at Carterton, yesterday, was not very largely attended, Tho principal purchaser was Mr G. W. Richard Monckton Milne, first Baron Houghton, whose death is announced by cable, was a politician of some standing at Home, but he always refused to take office.
