The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JULY 31. 1885. THIS ROADS AND BRIDGES CONSTRUCTION ACT.
The arguments which are employed by our local contemporary against the Roads and Bridges Construction Act are as amusing as they are misleading. He has apparently abandoned .the position wliich he took up, that tjje ratepayers were being wade to pay for roads and bridges made for the benefit of [-articular settlers, and in place of that finds fault because some of thorn consented to rate themselves for the re-payment of twenty per cent of the money expended for their benefit, while others become responsible for the full amount. We have yet to learn that the bridge spanning the Taueru on the Te Ore Oreßideford road is only for the benefit of Mr Hawkins. Our impression has always been that the road has not received the amount ol attention which it deserves, because it is the nearest way to Alfredtou, Tiraumea, and Puketoi, It cannot be denied that tho ford which formerly existed was exceedingly dangerous, and that that was the reason why the bridge was built. If the construction of this bridge and of a number of other works in due to jobbery on the part of the County Council, and of those who had influence with it and the Government, what guarantee is there that similar jobs will not be perpetrated under the system which is now prpposed by the Govern, went? There isfl.ojjie whatever. The position of tho ratepayers would be even worse than at present, because, they would not bo consulted, ;
