CARTERTON TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present—Messrs R. Fairbrother (chairman), Callister, Campbell, Parker, and Vickerstaff, ■ The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £77 12s 6d. The Inspector's report was read, and attention was drawn to the state of the footpath' from Gallia's corner to Mr. Catt's, and a discussion'arose on the matter, when it was moved by Mr Callister and seconded by Mr Parker,, that the kerbing be lowered some three or four inches, as it wan considered too high. A letter was read from the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council, complaining of the ways of the Government Audit, and asking this, Board, to cooperate with them in trying to get some diflerent style of conducting it." • It was not thought desirable to enter 'tain it. _■ A letter was read from Mr G. A. Fair" brother offering a piece of land for a

gravel-pit at ascertain price, namely, five acres at £24 per acre, oil the following terms :-r£lo down, and the balance an may.be arranged at 8 per cent. It was thought advisable to inspect the land before deciding on the matter, and if the Board decide on purchasing, it was resulved to leave the matter in the hands of'the Chairman and Mr Callister to arrange with the vendor. Mr Ridgway waited on the Board and complained about the disturbance which was created at the old Town Hall, which is just opposite his residence, stating that he, being a ratepayer, had a right to be protected. He pointed out to the Board that they had refused to let the Hall to the Mormons some little time ago. The Chairman made a statement in reference to the Salvation Army, and stated they had not fulfilled their agreement in reference to paying for the Hall. They agreed to give 10s per week, but having failed in that, they wanted it for Bs, and lastly for ss. \ It was moved; by Mr and seconded by Mr Campbell, that the Salvationists liavetlife use of the 1 . Hall ..for 8s per week, but thatthe windows; which had been broken since ' they had taken it must be replaced at once. The Clerk informed, the Board that before the next ordinary meeting the poll would have to be taken for the election of new members.

It was resolved that the present members meet on the 22nd August to adjust' all outstanding accounts, Accounts amounting to £33 17s Gd were passed.for payment, and the meeting terminated. .
